According to this news from the Sunday Times on May 25, 2008, Barack Obama now has about $38m cash in hand for the remaining campaign, compared with Clinton’s $6m. That is a huge gap. How did this happen? The reporter said that there was only one real answer to Obama’s financial success: the internet.
The reporter said that it was one of Clinton’s many huge errors that she bypassed Silicon Valley’s fundraisers in favor of more traditional areas of Democratic support. Moreover, she missed the key element of the new politics: social networking. She still relied on AOL; Obama was Facebook. Clinton was using the PC; Obama was using a Mac. Well, looking the difference, it’s easy to understand why Obama can get much more money than Clinton did.
The most successful and important strategies the Obama team used is to create online social networking made such physical fundraisers redundant; and it also realised that a much better point of entry wasn’t $2,300 but only $200. It definitely appeals to the young made this strategy viral. Last month’s $31m haul – almost all of it accrued online – is all the more impressive when you discover that 94% of it came in sums of $200 or less. The reporter predicted that a million little donors became the model. I think it will be very possible in the future as well. It is not late for everyone especially politcs to involve in social media to shorten the distance between people.
