Word has it that the excellent local news site Crosscut (News of the Great Nearby) will become a non-profit. The change will open up some possibilities to seek foundation and grant support. They will also be able to position themselves for pledge drives, like public radio stations. Some believe newspapers should go the non-profit route to get themselves out from under rapacious venture capitalists and stockholders. Making the change still leaves open the question of how they can raise the money necessary to fund news gathering.
