Last week, Ross Asdourian released the latest episode of his comical video series Local Brew and seems to finally have established the traction he was looking for. It’s called “Welcome to Seattle” and it spoofs Will Smith’s horrific “Welcome to Miami” song that essentially ended Smith’s music career. Asdourian isn’t the first person to mock the song, but he might have pulled off the best version yet.
If you’re not familiar, Local Brew is billed as Seattle’s only only comedy series and the basis seems to involve Asdourian finding interesting ways to poke fun at typically uptight Seattleites. There’s a lot of material to choose from there so he shouldn’t be running out of material soon. Here’s the thing: from my estimates his preview videos all seem to get a decent amount of viewers but “Welcome to Seattle” hit 15,000 views in just three days which strongly trumps everything else that has been a part of Local Brew.
I’m trying to figure out why that is an the only real answer is that this video really delves into the neighborhoods and personality quirks of people who live in Seattle (whether they’re from here or not) and that’s the difference. Poking fun at people who live in this city is typically reserved for natives and the cliche slaps against passive aggressiveness, etc. Moving beyond that like “Welcome to Seattle” does is a smart move.
The video is also cheesy and funny. It’s you get the feeling that this is the tone Local Brew wants to hit and it just took them awhile to get there. It’ll be interesting to see what Asdourian does next with the series now that he’s got so many people’s attention.
