Imagine a world where robots could read our minds — that day has come. The world has come into an age where technology is our lifeline. Most of the world’s population doesn’t go a day without the assistance of multiple robots. Robots are defined by dictionary.com as, “any machine or mechanical device that operates automatically with humanlike skills.” That definition would apply to smart phones, which most people won’t leave the house without. In today’s world people would be lost without the technologies that we use.
Robots help people at GM build cars. People utilize them to navigate while driving through unknown territory, and they can warn you when you about to get into an accident. Robots are now used in prosthetics for the benefit of making them more lifelike; giving people with missing limbs the ability to run marathons. Everyday people are developing cutting edge new technologies that are helping humans have more fulfilling lives.
If they weren’t already smart enough, a group of scientist have developed a robot that can read our minds. Mashable recently reported on an exciting new technology — brain powered robots. One way this technology is going to help is by giving people with paralysis the ability to move again. Jan Scheueman is paralyzed from the neck down, and now she has the ability to pour and drink out of the glass because of a robotic arm that moves by reading her mind .
This robot works by using a brain computer interface. Signals that are produced by the visual cortex that controls the movements of the robot — literally the robot reads your mind.
The Northeastern University News also wrote an article about this innovative technology winning the first prize at the electrical and computer engineering capstone project competition. Professor Bahram Shafai and Deniz Erdogmus directed this project with a team of four other people including Saumitro Dasgupta, Mike Fanton, Mike Willard and Johnathan Pham.
Not only is this new technology being used for people suffering from paralysis, it is helping people who are disabled or are neurologically impaired by enhancing human cognitive or sensory functions. It is also being used to control military vehicles, lights, and TV’s.
This technology is positively changing people’s lives forever. Think about people who get paralyzed in accident or in combat. They now have the possibility to regain functions in their limbs by using robots. Robots assisting them in their everyday lives making the impossible possible.
