In light of the COM 529 guest speaker Shelly Farnham’s discussion of Facebook last Thursday, and class comments about social media’s generational appeal, I ran across this Time.com article: Suffering From Facebook Fatigue?
Author Anita Hamilton’s Facebook experiences detail an effect the ‘social’ side of social media – that some of us find so, well, invasive and annoying. Aside from loss of privacy there is the loss of precious time. Out of fear of being anti-social (and based on this article, even non-altruistic) can one be made a prisoner of Facebook friends constant suggestions to “give a grain of rice, send good karma and rate your friends on everything including their hotness, creativity, fashion sense and intelligence.”?
Actually, Facebook seems to be a great way for people to stay in touch and learn more about each other. But it is also a generational thing. Maybe when we begin to take on more (and more professional) roles we find a need to be less transparent. Is it one thing to Google a student’s MySpace or Facebook page for more information, but quite another for a student to mine an instructor’s Facebook page for same?
