Internet advertising and the trademarks

There is a new surprise from Google…

I was working on the creation of a new text ads set for one of my Google AdWords accounts just 10 minutes ago. Suddenly, I’ve got a notification that one of my newly created ads was disapproved because it “didn’t appear to comply with one or more of their editorial guidelines”. That happens time to time, but this time I was really surprised!

Check the reason for disapproval:

“Due to trademark reasons, we do not allow advertisers to use ‘Exact’ in their Google AdWords ads. This term may be trademarked either for a certain product or service category and may apply only in certain countries.”

That’s not even a noun!

What’s going on? Does it mean that anyone can register any commonly used word and restrict its usage?

Ivan.

This is odd. Have you contacted their support? I ran the word “exact” through their adwords keyword tool and it came back with plenty of suggestions. It gave me no warning that “exact” was an unacceptable word. Sheesh….this would be like trying to reserve words like “fair” or “balanced”.

You can use “exact” as a keyword. There are no limitations on that. I tried to use it in the ad copy. (“exact price”)
I also did contact their support and requested an exemption.
