Flip the Media
A blog about the digital media revolution

Artists Robin Hewlett & Ben Kinsley teamed up with the Google Street View to coordinate “a series of tableaux”  throughout the streets of Pittsburgh’s northside. Entitled STREET WITH A VIEW, the project demonstrates a series of intended human interactions with this (somewhat) controversial technology. I’m always interested in artists working specifically with technology in innovative ways, especially when it brings a wide range of people together. This example is the best I’ve seen yet.

With Street View in Seattle now I’m wondering whether anyone will get caught doing something embarassing. An Electronic Frontier Foundation guy tells the story of being caught by Street View in San Francisco smoking a cigarette – a habit he swore to his family he had give up. Someone spotted him and he was busted.

I found myself in my car in the right lane of 1st Avenue in front of the Showbox, with the GoogleCam car in the left lane. I’ve been afraid to look and see if I ended up in StreetView, but I was very careful not to pick my nose while waiting for the light to change.
