Social media is a reflection of real life, and real life is more fragmented and chaotic than we'd like to believe. Why should our e-lives be any different? It's no wonder Lifehacker is so incredibly popular - it's just profiting on denial.

As a self-proclaimed pack rat on and off line, I rarely delete or throw away. Instead, I organize much in the way that Annie describes. Digitally speaking, a number of tools have enabled me to do so with ease. For example, instead of deleting email accounts, I enable mail forwarding. Instead of visiting hundreds of separate blog pages, I use Google Reader. Likewise, I utilize iGoogle as a dashboard of my favorite sites and widgets. As for digital files, I keep every single one of them on an single external hard drive.

That being said, the web has not yet caught up with the amount of digital junk in our trunks. The suite of aggregation tools is incomplete and in some cases inadequate (i.e. points.com). From what I know, we do not yet have a place to aggregate all of our social networking pages – from Facebook and Ning to Twitter and LinkedIn. I surmise, however, that we will see one such tool in the near future.

So, I would wait to spring clean per se. I believe we are going to see continued innovation and improvement of aggregation sites.

And, don’t feel bad about being a pack rat online, so long as you can navigate what you have, the web has plenty of space to facilitate you.

And all that mess of digital junk can be exacerbated by the need for security with varied usernames and passwords.

An image of Prof. Bennett’s messy desktop projected at the MCDM Digital Pres event comes to mind. Someone should coordinate a universal day for digital clean-up. Maybe more than once a year? I’m starting with my own digital disaster-site of a desktop!
