Records Management Goes Mobile

ImageSource, an enterprise content management company, held their annual Nexus conference November 4-5, 2010 in Bellevue, WA. The Nexus conference showcased advancements and trends being made in the records and information content management industry. The event featured presentations discussing industry trends, industry evolution, project management, and change management. But the hook here is that for the first time this conference showed that records management, an industry born from paper, is boldly stepping into the digital age.

In his keynote speech, Shadrach White, the CTO of ImageSource, discussed the integration of mobile technology in records and information. He pointed out that businesses now have a new and real expectation of interacting in social media-like environments. The evangelical climax of his speech led to the unveiling of the new ImageSource product – the ILINX Tablet, a fully integrated Intel-based business mobile device running Window 7 and the first one designed solely for the needs of their customers. The image of records managers standing in a dusty warehouse taking manual inventory of banker’s boxes was quickly replaced by a cooler image of themselves using this nifty tablet in their daily operations. (Check out the specs and more information on the ILINX tablet at another conference attendee’s blog: http://www.augusthiggins.net/2010/11/exclusive-first-look-at-ilinx-tablet.html)

Other eye-catching digital media products at the conference included the Panasonic ElitePanaboard and the ILINX iPhone app, as well as an assortment of document scanners. The enthusiasm for social media at the conference was apparent; the lay-out included a dedicated cyber Café and twitter stations, and the use of social media throughout the conference was not only welcomed but encouraged. The glow of smartphones in the crowd and face-down-text-walkers could be seen for the next two days. The benefits of social media and the use of mobile technology in business were definitely the themes.

But the real news of the conference was the visionary entry of ImageSource into the mobile integrated business tablet arena with the ILINX device.

That sounds like an exciting conference. While it’s sad to see traditionally print businesses going out of business or having to drastically change because of the increasing use of mobile technology, it’s also very exciting to see companies embrace it. It definitely feels like we’re on the verge of a market flooded with tablets – I can’t wait. It’s also interesting to hear that social media was a big part of the conference. It seems like so many companies are trying to involve social media, but just as many seem to still be afraid to dip their toes in (or they still think they don’t need to). It will be interesting to see how much further social media usage and mobile technology have advanced by this time next year.

  6. Mandy, thank you for the very well written post. Having feedback from attendees in a public forum is the ultimate reward. The pace of change and the adoption of new technologies can be challenging and a little overwhelming for all of us. With a community of folks working together, sharing ideas, insights and experiences we can help make these transitions easier by building software tools that are easy to use and fun.

This new product direction that ILINX is pioneering for content capture and document management will provide a tremendous increase in the level of productivity for many different types of users – from remotely sited utility work crews, to home health care workers, to all manner of road warriors. It will be interesting to see case studies on how this is being used in the future.
