Joe Jonas skips Sophie Turner mention during Jonas Brothers concert amid divorce

Joe Jonas chose not to sing a lyric that referenced his estranged wife, Sophie Turner, during a performance with his brothers Nick and Kevin at the Festival d’été de Québec on July 6. Instead of singing the line from their 2019 song “Cool” – “Oh, I feel like Post Malone when I get home / Sittin’ there, winnin’ like it’s Game of Thrones,” Joe avoided mentioning the HBO series, as reported by Page Six.

Sophie Turner gained fame for her role as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, which she played from 2011 until the show concluded in 2019. This is not the first time Joe has skipped singing this particular lyric. He also avoided it during a concert in April, opting to let the audience take over that part of the song.

Joe’s decision not to sing about Game of Thrones comes amid his ongoing divorce from Sophie Turner, which was confirmed by Us Weekly last year due to their marriage being “irretrievably broken.” They announced their decision to end their marriage the following day.

“After four wonderful years of marriage we have mutually decided to amicably end our marriage,” they wrote in a joint statement shared via Instagram in September 2023. “There are many speculative narratives as to why but, truly this is a united decision and we sincerely hope that everyone can respect our wishes for privacy for us and our children.”

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s divorce documents revealed the first clue about their second daughter’s name. While the estranged couple have kept the 1-year-old’s moniker a mystery since her July 2022 arrival, Jonas’ Tuesday divorce filing shared her initials. The little one’s first name starts with a D, as she is mentioned as D.J. in court docs obtained by Page Six. The duo’s eldest daughter, Willa, 3, is listed as W.J.

In the paperwork, filed in Miami, the Jonas Brothers member sought “shared parental responsibility” of the toddlers while noting that they have been living primarily with him. The singer, 34, requested that a “parenting schedule” and a “timesharing plan” be established.

When TMZ broke the news Sunday that Jonas and Turner, 27, were heading for divorce, the outlet claimed that Willa and her sister had been with their dad “pretty much all the time” as he toured with Kevin Jonas and Nick Jonas. While Joe did not comment on the split speculation at the time, he confused fans by performing with his wedding ring back on that night for the first time in many shows.

Joe Jonas filed for divorce from wife Sophie Turner on Sept. 5, 2023, after four years of marriage. The couple have two children together. A source claims the pair had “many disagreements,” and the divorce was a “last resort” for Jonas. Jonas is seeking “shared parental responsibility” with his estranged wife. The children are said to live primarily with Jonas, and the singer is said to be caring for them “pretty much all the time.”

Turner’s penchant for partying is believed to have factored into the split, and a source said the pair have “very different lifestyles.” Turner is suing Jonas to return their two daughters to England. The actress claims she found out her estranged husband filed for divorce “through the media.“ Jonas blasted the lawsuit, saying it goes against an “amicable co-parenting setup.”

After he filed for divorce on Tuesday, a source told Page Six that tapping powerhouse attorney Tom Sasser and filing paperwork was a “last resort” for the “unhappy” actor. “He never wanted to break up his family, but he had to take what he felt was the best course of action for his girls,” the insider said. “An unhappy home isn’t a home, and the truth is that he and Sophie were going through it this year. There’s a lot of noise out there, but it wasn’t a straw-that-broke-the-camel’s-back situation like it’s being reported,” the source continued, citing “many disagreements” that led Joe to feel “that he had exhausted all options.”

People reported that the pair had been “living separate lives for months,” while TMZ alleged Turner’s partying may have factored into their breakup. The “Game of Thrones” began dating Joe in 2016, with him getting down on one knee the following year. They wed in two ceremonies in 2019. The actress gave birth to Willa in July 2020, followed by baby No. 2 two years later.

Turner explained their decision to stay private about their children in a 2021 Instagram Story post, saying her kids “did not ask for this life.” The “Dark Phoenix” star has, however, given glimpses of her motherhood experience over the years, most recently while speaking to British Vogue. “I simply cannot leave the house without a snack for [my daughter] because then my life would be made a living hell,” Turner joked in June 2022. “I would get yelled at.”

Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner have reached a tentative agreement to resolve her federal lawsuit demanding the return of the couple’s two young daughters to her native England amid the former pair’s divorce. In a court filing on Tuesday (Oct. 10), lawyers for Jonas Brothers singer and the Game of Thrones star said they had made progress in mediation talks and that they “believe that an amicable resolution on all issues between them is forthcoming.”

Filed last month in Manhattan federal court, Turner’s lawsuit claimed that Jonas was in possession of the children’s passports and was refusing to allow them to return to the U.K. as the couple had previously planned would be their “forever home.” The lawsuit, citing international treaties on child abduction, was a dramatic escalation of their divorce case, which Jonas had filed weeks earlier in Miami.

It’s unclear if the pending agreement mentioned in Tuesday’s court filings will resolve the entire divorce case in Florida, or merely the thorny questions of international custody raised by Turner’s lawsuit. No mention of a settlement deal has been filed with the Miami court.

In a joint statement from Turner and Jonas shared with Billboard, the former couple said: “After a productive and successful mediation, we have agreed that the children will spend time equally in loving homes in both the U.S. and the UK. We look forward to being great co-parents.”

After four years of marriage, Jonas filed for divorce in Miami on Sept. 5, stating that that “the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken.” In her own court filings, Turner has said his “sudden” divorce filing came after an argument on the singer’s birthday on Aug. 15. The day after Jonas filed the case, the couple released a joint statement confirming the split.

On Sept. 15, it was Turner’s turn to file a case. In a petition filed in New York federal court, she claimed that the couple had permanently relocated to England in March and had previously planned for the children to return with her in September, but that Jonas “refuses to return the passports to the Mother and refuses to send the children home to England with the Mother.”

The filing cited the Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, an international treaty signed by both the U.S. and the U.K. Turner claimed that Jonas’ decisions constituted “wrongful retention” of the children under the terms of the treaty.

“The Father’s retention of the children in the United States from England is therefore wrongful under the Hague Convention because the Father has retained the children from their habitual residence of England, in breach of the Mother’s rights of custody to the children under English law, which the Mother was exercising at the time of the retention,” her lawyers wrote at the time.

Jonas’ rep have denied the allegations in Turner’s lawsuit.
