Terry Matalas, renowned for his skill in revamping classic sci-fi, is set to remake the 1985 film Enemy Mine for 20th Century Studios. The project is in its early stages, with no cast or director announced yet.
Steve Asbell, the head of 20th Century Studios, selected Matalas to breathe new life into the interstellar story. Despite its initial box office failure, Enemy Mine has gained a cult following and critical acclaim over the years for its unique charm.
Matalas, known for his work on the 12 Monkeys series and the second and third seasons of Star Trek: Picard, will bring his genre expertise to this remake. Fans of the original, which starred Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr., can expect a sci-fi spectacle with plenty of nods to the ’80s classic.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Matalas was chosen by Asbell to lead the reimagining of Enemy Mine. Matalas’ impressive work has also caught the attention of Kevin Feige, who has selected him as the showrunner for a new series centered on the Marvel character The Vision, set to be released on Disney+ in the future.
Enemy Mine, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, originally hit theaters on December 20, 1985. The film follows spaceship pilot Willis Davidge, played by Dennis Quaid, who becomes stranded on an alien world with enemy fighter Jeriba Shigan, portrayed by Louis Gossett Jr. The two must work together to survive the hostile environment, leading to an unlikely friendship that faces significant challenges.
The original film’s cast also included Brion James, Richard Marcus, Carolyn McCormick, and Bumper Robinson. The screenplay was written by Edward Khmara, and the movie was distributed by 20th Century Fox.
With Matalas at the helm, the new Enemy Mine aims to capture the essence of the original while introducing it to a new generation of sci-fi fans. The project is still in its infancy, but anticipation is already building among fans of the genre.
As the remake progresses, more details about the cast and director will likely emerge. For now, fans can look forward to seeing how Matalas will reimagine this beloved sci-fi tale.
