Pharrell has seemingly issued a subtle response to Drake’s previous diss with his new track “Double Life.” The song, part of the Despicable Me 4 soundtrack, has sparked speculation that it addresses the Canadian rapper.
Released this past Friday, “Double Life” features lyrics that many believe are aimed at Drake. Pharrell sings, “Hey, what are you hiding? / What you do when you’re gone? / Nothin’ wrong bein’ private / Make sure it ain’t wrong / Your life double-sided / Two-faced like coins / What side do I get? / What side are you on?”
He continues with, “So what have you done? / Some of your dirt has come to light … Lie detector time / Do you feel bad when you lie?”
Although Pharrell doesn’t explicitly mention Drake, fans are convinced the song is a response to Drake’s recent comments during his beef with Kendrick Lamar. Lamar had previously rapped about inheriting Pharrell’s silent feud with Drake, which led Drake to challenge Lamar to retrieve Pharrell’s jewelry from his home.
The tension between Pharrell and Drake isn’t new. Their issues date back to 2018 when Pharrell’s close friend Pusha T was embroiled in a rap feud with Drake. Feeling slighted by Pharrell’s apparent support for Pusha T, Drake has taken several shots at Pharrell over the years. Most notably, on Travis Scott’s 2023 track “Meltdown,” Drake rapped, “I melt down the chains that I bought from yo boss / Give a f**k about all of that heritage s*** / Since V not around, the members done hung up the Louis / They not even wearing that s***.”
This lyric was a direct jab at Pharrell, referencing the multi-million-dollar jewelry Drake purchased from Pharrell’s auction and taking a shot at Pharrell’s role as Louis Vuitton’s new menswear creative director, succeeding the late Virgil Abloh.
As of now, Drake has not responded to Pharrell’s latest track. The ongoing tension between the two artists continues to captivate fans, who eagerly await the next development in this high-profile feud.
