Elon Musk, the tech entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is not only known for his groundbreaking ventures but also for his large family. Musk is a father to 11 children, born to three different women over the span of two decades.
Musk’s journey into fatherhood began with his first wife, Canadian author Justine Wilson. The couple, who met at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, married in 2000. Their first child, Nevada Alexander Musk, was born in 2002 but tragically passed away at just 10 weeks old due to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Following this loss, Musk and Wilson turned to in vitro fertilization (IVF) and welcomed twins Griffin and Vivian in 2004, and triplets Kai, Saxon, and Damian in 2006. The couple divorced in 2008.
In 2018, Musk began a relationship with singer-songwriter Grimes, whose real name is Claire Boucher. They had their first child, a son named X Æ A-Xii, in May 2020. The unique name, pronounced “X Ash A Twelve,” had to be slightly altered to comply with California’s naming laws. The couple welcomed their second child, a daughter named Exa Dark Sideræl, via surrogate in December 2021. Exa is often referred to as “Y.” In September 2023, it was revealed that Musk and Grimes had a third child named Techno Mechanicus, nicknamed “Tau.”
In addition to his children with Wilson and Grimes, Musk also has twins named Strider and Azure with Shivon Zilis, an AI specialist and executive at Neuralink, a company Musk co-founded. The twins were born in November 2021.
Musk’s views on parenthood are well-documented. He believes that people should have more children, a sentiment echoed by author Walter Isaacson in his biography of Musk. Despite his busy schedule, Musk has stated that he spends almost all of his non-work waking hours with his children, describing them as the love of his life.
Musk’s family dynamics are complex, with his children spread across different households and relationships. However, he remains a dedicated father, often seen spending time with his kids and sharing moments from their lives.
