Dallas Jenkins’ long-awaited project, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever,” has finally entered production, with Judy Greer and Pete Holmes leading the cast. The film, a collaboration between Kingdom Story Company and Lionsgate, is based on Barbara Robinson’s bestselling book. Jenkins, who has been pursuing this project for 15 years, expressed his excitement about bringing this story to life, especially with the talented cast and crew involved.
Jenkins shared his enthusiasm with Deadline, stating, “I have been pursuing this project for 15 years, so to actually be on set is a special moment. I’m especially grateful to be working with Judy and Pete, who are extraordinary talents and are already showing their mastery of the drama and the comedy. And the actors playing all the kids, including the Herdmans? I’ve been blown away.”
The story revolves around the unruly Herdman kids, who take over the town’s Christmas pageant. Their wild antics drive everyone, especially the pageant’s director Grace, played by Greer, to the brink. However, through their chaotic behavior, the Herdmans help the town rediscover the true meaning of Christmas.
Greer, who feels a personal connection to the story, shared, “[I felt] right at home among the Herdmans. Before she married my father, my mother was a nun who got kicked out of the convent for her outrageous behavior – like owning a red bathing suit.”
Holmes, who plays Grace’s husband Bob, added, “I love this story, and Dallas’ enthusiasm for it is infectious. It’s hugely gratifying to be a part of a movie that I hope will become part of holiday celebrations for years to come.”
The screenplay was adapted by Jenkins, Darin McDaniel, Platte Clark, and Ryan Swanson. The film is being produced by Kingdom Story Company’s Kevin Downes, Daryl Lefever, Andrew Erwin, and Jon Erwin, along with McDaniel and Chet Thomas. Lionsgate’s president of production, Erin Westerman, expressed confidence in Jenkins’ vision, saying, “The passion and vision Dallas has for this story is infectious — and to show him how we believe in the project as much as he does, we turned the Lionsgate restaurant into a holiday wonderland for him. We believe he will deliver a holiday perennial that will be fun for the whole family next holiday season.”
The film is currently being shot in Winnipeg, with a planned release for the winter of 2024. The production has already generated significant buzz, with fans eagerly anticipating its release.
Kevin Downes, a producer on the film, shared a behind-the-scenes look at the production on social media, expressing his excitement about the project. “Hey, everybody. [I’m on] the set of BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER…It’s the end of week one, and let me tell you, I just love making movies for you guys…I can’t wait for you to see this one, it’s so good. It’s so warm and so funny,” Downes posted on Facebook.
Judy Greer, known for her roles in “White House Plumbers” and “Halloween Kills,” brings her unique charm and talent to the role of Grace. Her extensive filmography includes a wide range of genres, showcasing her versatility as an actress. Greer has also made her mark in television, with notable roles in series like “Archer” and “The Big Bang Theory.”
Pete Holmes, best known for his HBO comedy series “Crashing,” brings his comedic prowess to the role of Bob. Holmes recently released his fifth comedy special, “I Am Not for Everyone,” on Netflix and has appeared in various television shows and films.
Dallas Jenkins, the creator of the popular faith-based series “The Chosen,” is no stranger to directing impactful stories. His previous feature films include “The Resurrection of Gavin Stone” and “What If…,” both of which received positive reviews.
The film’s production team is confident that “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” will become a beloved holiday classic. With a talented cast, a passionate director, and a heartwarming story, the film is poised to capture the hearts of audiences everywhere.
As the production continues in Winnipeg, fans can look forward to more updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the making of this highly anticipated film.
