Blake Lively is back to her playful antics, and this time, it’s all about her husband, Ryan Reynolds. The Gossip Girl alum couldn’t resist commenting on a photo of Reynolds that his friend and co-star Hugh Jackman posted. The snapshot features the Deadpool actor in a white tank top, showing off his impressive arms while pointing at the camera with a mischievous smirk. The two were in Shanghai, with the Oriental Pearl Radio & Television Tower visible in the background, likely for press events ahead of the release of Deadpool & Wolverine later this month.
Jackman captioned the photo with a cheeky remark, “‘You want me to put this away?’ — Ryan Reynolds, co-star, mouth breather, a–hole.” Reynolds, always quick with a joke, commented that the photo was from his “private collection” and added, “How dare you?” But it was Lively’s comment that stole the show. She quipped, “My thirst has been trapped,” making it clear she didn’t mind the exposure of her husband’s physique.
The fan-favorite couple is known for their playful banter on social media. They often pop up under each other’s posts, either to lovingly troll one another or to hype up their respective “thirst trap” style photos. Reynolds even manages to do both at once on occasion. He once shared an “uncanny caricature” of Lively in a red bikini, drawn in harsh lines of bold blue ink. He’s especially vocal on her birthday each year, once hitting her with a carousel full of candid photos that she wasn’t quite ready for, and drawing skepticism from fans when he shared an “unusually lovely” selection several years later.
If there’s one thing Blake Lively will always do, it’s gush over her husband Ryan Reynolds online. After Hugh Jackman shared a photo of Reynolds in a white tank top showing off his bicep and pointing to the camera, Lively made her feelings quite plain. Underneath the July 2 post, she wrote, “My thirst has been trapped.” As for Reynolds, he took a more cheeky approach, joking, “This photo is from my private collection. How dare you?”
Meanwhile, Jackman himself took a sly jab at his longtime pal and Deadpool and Wolverine co-star, suggesting Reynolds was all too proud of his muscular arms. He captioned the photo, “You want me to put this away? —Ryan Reynolds, co-star, mouth breather. a–hole.” Of course, Reynolds, 47, is no stranger to playful ribbing online, whether it’s from the Greatest Showman actor or his wife of nearly 14 years.
In fact, Reynolds and Lively—who are parents to daughters James, 9, Inez, 7, and Betty, 4, as well as a fourth baby they confirmed they welcomed in February 2023—have become quite notorious for their banter online. Take, for instance, when the It Ends With Us star joined BFF Taylor Swift at the 2024 Super Bowl, where they watched the “Karma” singer’s boyfriend Travis Kelce win his third championship. Reynolds, who stayed home during the big game, posed next to the TV as his new Deadpool and Wolverine trailer debuted. “Has everyone seen the #Deadpool trailer?” he wrote in the Feb. 11 post. “Also has anyone seen my wife?”
The very next day, Lively, 36, issued her response, posing for a pic in the exact same spot as Reynolds. “Honey I’m home,” she responded on Instagram Stories. “My day was good. Yours?” And while Lively and Reynolds love to poke fun on social media, they’ve made it clear it’s all love. In fact, The Proposal star previously told Today that his philosophy for trolling is to do so “only when it comes to those most precious to me.”
Their playful relationship is a constant source of entertainment for fans. For example, on Lively’s birthday, Reynolds once created a fully produced music video for friend Rob McElhenney’s big day in April 2023. “That’s a lot of effort you put into this,” she wrote on social media. “Can’t wait for August 25th.” The actress also trolled her husband as he attended a particularly gripping match for his soccer team, Wrexham AFC. The Welsh football club, of which he is a co-owner, played against Sheffield United during the fourth round of the FA Cup. “I bought espn+ today,” Lively wrote on her Instagram Story. “Just to watch my husband experience crippling anxiety live. Worth it.”
Their banter extends to everyday moments as well. Lively once had a question for her husband Ryan, brother-in-law Terry Reynolds, and sister Robyn Lively: “How did not one person find the time to mention to me that this is what my hair looked like today?” In an ad for his company Mint Mobile, Reynolds asked for Lively to come out and talk about the brand’s family plan. However, a stand-in for the actress appeared instead. As Lively joked on Instagram in July 2022, “Darling, if you charged more, you could afford me. Sorry, your real wife.” And when he claimed he was “revolutionizing the category,” she replied, “@vancityreynolds, my love, feel free to revolutionize the couch when you sleep on it tonight!!”
When Reynolds announced he planned to take a “little sabbatical from movie making,” Lively commented, “Michael Caine did it first,” referring to an interview in which the Dark Knight actor hinted that he had shot his final film. Reynolds later clarified that he has not retired from acting. In true Ryan fashion, he poked fun at his wife on her 34th birthday by snubbing her on Instagram. Instead of sharing a sweet tribute to mark the occasion, he cheekily praised Mariah Carey, quipping on Instagram Stories, “My favorite thing that’s ever happened on August 25.”
Blake returned the favor when it came to Ryan’s 41st birthday in 2017, with her husband even admitting how “awesome” her Instagram post was. “Happy Birthday, baby,” she wrote alongside a pic of Ryan Gosling with her Ryan cropped out at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Ah, revenge is sweet. While promoting A Simple Favor, Lively had to deal with Reynolds tweeting at her for spoilers about what happened to her missing character. “You can tell me. We’re married,” he wrote. “You once drove me to the hospital when you were giving birth. So… what the f–k happened to Emily?” In response, Lively tweeted, “Oh darling, of all the secrets I’m keeping from you, this should be the LEAST of your concerns… trust me.”
The mutual adoration and admiration really shine through in their interactions. Whether it’s Reynolds sharing a photo of Lively that she wasn’t quite ready for or Lively making a cheeky comment about her husband’s physique, their playful relationship is a constant source of joy for their fans. And as long as they keep up their antics, we’ll be here to enjoy every moment.
