Miranda Lambert’s fine with fights breaking out at her shows — as long as fans choose their timing carefully. The singer recently broke up a fight during a performance of “Tin Man,” her award-winning heartbreak ballad. She shut the situation down quickly, even calling the police over to remove the rowdy fans from the crowd. But after the fact, Lambert clarified that it wasn’t the fight itself that bothered her: It was the fact that it disrupted one of her most powerful sad songs.
“If you want to fight at my shows, I’m all about it. Give ’em hell,” Lambert said in a video message she posted to social media. “I’ve got five songs for you.” She then went on to list the songs from her catalog that provide a more appropriate backdrop to a brawl: “Fastest Girl in Town,” “Kerosene,” “Gunpowder and Lead,” “Little Red Wagon” and her new single, “Wranglers.”
Lambert loves a rowdy country show, but even more than that, she loves strong storytelling and emotion — and that’s why she won’t tolerate fist fights during the heavy-hitter ballads. “Don’t do it during ‘Tin Man.’ That’s not the time,” she continued. “I know you can hear the s–t-talking because it’s a ballad. But that’s not the time. So pick your times. You’ve got five songs. Look at the set list and choose wisely.”
Fans in the comments section mostly had messages of support to share, but some had their own suggestions for other fight-appropriate songs from Lambert’s catalog, like “Only Prettier,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” and “Mama’s Broken Heart.”
Lambert’s currently on a new music kick: After dropping “Wranglers” in May, she followed the single up with another new song, “Dammit Randy,” which includes a co-writing credit from her husband Brendan McLoughlin.
Miranda Lambert has rules to follow for fans who throw punches at her concerts. “If you want to fight at my concerts, give ‘em hell. I’ve got five songs for you,” the 40-year-old deadpanned in an Instagram video Tuesday. “‘Fastest Girl in Town,’ ‘Kerosene,’ ‘Little Red Wagon,’ ‘Wranglers,’ ‘Gunpowder & Lead.’ Don’t do it during ‘Tin Man.’ That’s not the time. I know you can hear the s— talking ‘cause it’s a ballad, but that’s not the time. So, pick your times. You’ve got five songs.”
Lambert, while winking, then told fans to “look at the set list and choose your songs wisely.” The tongue-in-cheek post came just days after social video showed the “If I Was a Cowboy” singer responding to a brawl while she was in the middle of “Tin Man” in Texas Saturday.
“Did somebody faint? Did somebody pass out? Are you good?” Lambert asked, after pausing the song. “Are y’all fighting during this song? Because I will come down there, and you don’t want that today. We’re not doing that today. I’m going to go East Texas on you’re a– real quick!” She then asked if everyone was OK and if anyone was “bleeding” before joking, “It’s always the girls! We always get riled up, and we start punching each other. Why?”
She then asked security to have the brawlers removed, joking, “She looks about (5-foot-4). Throw her over your shoulder, man.” The country star stirred controversy last year when she stopped in the middle of “Tin Man” to admonish several fans for taking a selfie during the show. After singing just a few bars of the song at her Las Vegas residency last July, Lambert told the audience, “I’m gonna stop right here for a second. … These girls are worried about their selfie and not listening to the song. It’s p—ing me off a little bit.”
“I don’t like it, at all,” she said to cheers. “We’re here to hear some country music tonight. I’m singing some country damn music.” She then asked the group to sit down before restarting the song. Lambert received mixed reactions for calling out the fans. Some felt the star called out audience members who weren’t causing trouble. On Tuesday, however, Lambert seemed to receive broad support from fans about her message.
“This is the best,” one fan commented under the post. “Have some respect for Tin Man people. Also no fighting during vice either. Lol.” A second person agreed “Tin Man is sacred,” while another joked “the fights are scheduled into the set now lol.”
Over the weekend, Miranda Lambert headlined a show at Momentum Bank Ballpark in Midland, Texas, and she had to play referee when she noticed a girl fight breaking out during “Tin Man,” which is typically (and supposed to be) a very stripped-back and powerful moment in her set. But in a video shared by a fan at the show, you can see Miranda playing the striking ballad when she notices something’s going on near the front of the crowd.
At first, she seems to think someone is hurt or overheated and dealing with a medical emergency, though she quickly realizes that it’s a full-on brawl and tells them to stop. My favorite part is when she tells the girls she’s gonna go “east Texas red” on their asses and jokes that “he’s not worth it” (obviously implying that they’re fighting over a boy). Eventually, she grows frustrated, presumably how slow the police are handling the situation, and tells them to just remove the one girl who looks to be about 5’4, saying they can just “throw her over” their shoulder and get on with it.
If there’s absolutely one thing in this world I would never want, it’s Miranda Lambert getting off stage during a performance to beat my a**. She has mentioned before that girls are prone to fight during “Mama’s Broken Heart” but really, I do not understand the “Tin Man” thing and neither does she. Miranda shared a hilarious video on Instagram earlier, telling her fans to stop fighting during that ballad because it’s simply “not the time” (duh), and instead giving them five other song options to let fists fly during. She actually said she’s “all about” the fighting during her songs, but only during the appropriate times and it’s kinda of brilliant: “If you wanna fight at my shows, I’m all about it, give ’em hell. I’ve got five songs for you. ‘Fastest Girl in Town,’ ‘Kerosene,’ ‘Little Red Wagon,’ ‘Wranglers,’ ‘Gunpowder & Lead.’ Don’t do it during ‘Tin Man.’ That’s not the time. I know you can hear the sh*t talking because it’s a ballad but that’s not the time. So pick your times. You’ve got five songs. Look at the set list and choose wisely.”
If you’re seeing her anytime soon, just make sure you take a peek at the set list beforehand and make sure you get the fight in during the appropriate aforementioned songs… just know you might be escorted out and not be able to see the whole concert happen: Personally, I think I’d go for it “Kerosene” or “Gunpowder & Lead”…
Following the “Tin Man” tussle, the singer suggested such alternatives as “Kerosene” and “Gunpowder and Lead.”
