A man was attacked by a shark while swimming in the Gulf Coast waters on the Fourth of July, turning a day of celebration into a scene of chaos and concern. The incident occurred off the southern coast of Texas, specifically near South Padre Island, where multiple shark encounters were reported.
The South Padre Island Police Department received a call around 11 a.m. local time, reporting a severe shark bite to a man’s leg near the 4100 block of Gulf Boulevard. First responders from the South Padre Island police and fire departments quickly arrived at the scene, providing immediate treatment before transporting the man to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville.
Footage captured by a beachgoer showed a shark swimming near the shore, close to where the attack took place. This was not an isolated incident; Texas Game Warden Capt. Chris Dowdy confirmed that four separate shark-related incidents occurred that day, including two bites. The second bite victim was also taken to Valley Regional Medical Center, with one of the two bite victims later flown out for further treatment.
In addition to the two bite victims, another person was grazed by the shark, and a fourth individual was injured while fending off the predator. The shark responsible for these attacks has since escaped to open waters, and there are currently no plans to contain it.
The South Padre Island Beach Patrol, along with the fire and police departments, have been patrolling the shoreline and using drones to monitor the area. Despite the heightened vigilance, officials emphasized that shark encounters of this nature are uncommon in Texas. They noted that when shark bites do occur, they are usually cases of mistaken identity, with sharks mistaking humans for their typical prey.
Authorities have issued safety guidelines for beachgoers, advising them to be cautious if they see large schools of bait near the shore, as this can indicate the presence of a predator. They also recommend calmly exiting the water if a shark is spotted and waiting for the animal to pass.
The local community has rallied around the victims and their families, offering support and prayers for their recovery. The incident has raised awareness about the presence of sharks in the area, prompting officials to increase beach patrols and issue warnings to ensure the safety of swimmers and beach visitors.
