Even though the hosts of “The View” often have differing opinions, they generally maintain a level of respect for one another. However, Whoopi Goldberg recently felt blindsided by a comment from Joy Behar that left her feeling rejected.
Since “The View” isn’t airing new episodes this week, some past moments are resurfacing. The hosts are taking a break while the network airs reruns to keep fans entertained. Typically, the hosts are open about their opinions and manage to set aside disagreements. However, Whoopi Goldberg was taken aback by an offhand comment from Joy Behar regarding their relationship.
During a previous segment, Joy Behar admitted she was “happy” to be fired when she was let go from “The View” in 2013. Joy explained that she wasn’t sad about her exit, saying, “I always have friends where I work, and if I don’t have friends at the job, I will not keep the job.” She continued, “So when I was fired the last time from this show,” which elicited laughter from the audience, she nodded and said, “Yes.” Joy added, “People say to me, were you ‘okay’ with that? I was happy because all my friends had left already.” This comment seemed to offend Whoopi Goldberg.
Joy reiterated, “So there was no reason to stay anymore.” Whoopi responded with disbelief, “Really?” She couldn’t believe Joy would say she didn’t have any friends left. Whoopi, who considered herself a friend to Joy, felt rejected by Joy’s blunt statement that “all her friends were gone.” Whoopi pressed further, “Really…’All your friends?'” hoping Joy would remember that she was part of “The View” at the time.
The audience and other co-hosts laughed as Whoopi took it personally and pouted. Joy responded, “You had just come on!” She clarified that her “backstage friends” had left. Whoopi jokingly continued to act offended, saying, “It’s okay…no I’m cool.” Joy then reiterated her point that she always has friends at work.
This exchange left Whoopi feeling hurt and questioning her relationship with Joy. The incident highlights the complexities of friendships and professional relationships, even among long-time colleagues.
