It’s the British romantic dramedy event of the year. On Wednesday, A24 released the trailer for “We Live in Time,” a moments-in-life romance film starring Academy Award nominees Andrew Garfield (“Tick, Tick…Boom!”) and Florence Pugh (“Little Women”).
The film, directed by BAFTA winner John Crowley (“Brooklyn”) and written by Tony nominee Nick Payne (“Constellations”), follows Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield) through major moments in their lives together. From their painful meet-cute, where Almut hits Tobias with her car, to raising their daughter and Almut being treated for cancer, the film appears to be a stylish tearjerker powered by the charisma of two of contemporary film’s most emotionally vulnerable actors.
If you’ve ever lamented that they don’t make movies like “About Time” anymore, this one is for you.
In addition to Garfield and Pugh, the cast includes Adam James, Marama Corlett, and Aoife Hinds. Leah Clarke, Adam Ackland, and Guy Heeley are producers, with Benedict Cumberbatch serving as an executive producer. Bryce Dessner, acclaimed composer, member of The National, and frequent Taylor Swift collaborator, provides the score. The film is produced by StudioCanal and Sunny March.
Garfield is best known for playing Peter Parker in several “Spider-Man” films, most recently 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” as well as his performances in films like “The Social Network” and “Hacksaw Ridge.” He won a Tony in 2018 for his performance as Prior Walter in the revival of “Angels in America.”
Pugh is best known for her performances in a wide range of films, including the A24 horror film “Midsommar,” the Marvel film “Black Widow,” and the sci-fi blockbuster “Dune: Part Two.” She won a SAG Award as a member of the cast of “Oppenheimer.”
“We Live in Time” will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, followed by a limited theatrical release by A24 on October 11.
Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield are starring in a new film together. On Wednesday, the official trailer for their upcoming movie, “We Live in Time,” was released and features the two actors portraying a couple’s journey as they experience life’s ups and downs.
The trailer opens with Pugh’s and Garfield’s respective characters, Almut and Tobias, sitting in a diner and telling a young girl that there’s something they want to talk to her about. Clips then show their characters’ progression as a couple from the moment they met—which appears to be during a car accident—to them dating, starting a family, and more.
“I’m worried that there’s a very distinct and real possibility that I’m about to fall in love with you,” Garfield says in a tender moment between him and Pugh during the trailer. At one point in the trailer, Pugh’s and Garfield’s characters appear to be dealing with a difficult event that poses challenging times ahead for the couple.
A description of the film calls it “a love story about the times that change us, and the times that make us.” Pugh shared the trailer in an Instagram post Wednesday, saying she was “touched” to be part of this film.
“Here it is. The trailer for #WeLiveInTime,” she wrote in the caption of the post. “I hope you enjoy watching as much as we enjoyed making. Every day I went to work appreciative for that experience, grateful for all of those I was working alongside, touched that I was a part of making a story like this. It truly felt like magic.”
A release date for “We Live In Time” hasn’t been announced yet, but StudioCanal and Film 4, the production companies behind the film, say it is “coming soon.”
Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield are falling in love onscreen for A24’s “We Live in Time.” The two Academy Award-nominated actors lead the decades-spanning indie directed by John Crowley from a script by Nick Payne.
The official synopsis reads: “Almut (Pugh) and Tobias (Garfield) are brought together in a surprise encounter that changes their lives. Through snapshots of their life together, falling for each other, building a home, becoming a family, a difficult truth is revealed that rocks its foundation. As the couple embarks on a path challenged by the limits of time, they learn to cherish each moment of the unconventional route their love story has taken.”
Leah Clarke, Guy Heeley, and Adam Ackland produce the feature, which will debut at this year’s TIFF.
Both Pugh and Garfield are returning to their respective indie drama roots after their dual turns in the superhero realms. While Garfield reprised his “Spider-Man” role for “No Way Home” in 2021, Pugh debuted in “Black Widow” the same year. Pugh continues her Marvel tenure with the upcoming franchise installment “The Thunderbolts.”
Pugh and Garfield have separately commented on balancing both big-budget franchises and indies alike. Pugh reflected on the initial backlash she received for seemingly selling out after breakout roles in independent films like “Lady Macbeth” and “Midsommar.”
“So many people in the indie film world were really pissed off at me. They were like, ‘Great, now she’s gone forever,'” Pugh told Time magazine. “And I’m like, no, I’m working as hard as I used to work. I’ve always done back-to-back movies. It’s just people are watching them now. You just have to be a bit more organized with your schedule.”
Garfield, meanwhile, told British GQ that he always “wanted to be a theatre actor first” in his career.
“It’s that eternal struggle between being devoted to the invisible world, the world of spirit, the world of imagination, creativity, what we know we’re meant to do. But if we were purely devoted to that, it would be much harder for us to put a roof over our heads. So how do we balance that?” Garfield said. “We’re living through a capitalistic period in the history of humanity. And it’s deeply disgusting and horrific and ugly and all those things, as well as beautiful. It’s a fascinating time to be alive. And how do artists—how does anyone, because everyone is an artist—really retain that connection to soul, to spirit, to the unseen, to the thing that really pulls us?”
