Felicity Huffman is set to make a significant impact in the upcoming season of “Criminal Minds: Evolution” on Paramount+. The “Desperate Housewives” alum will guest star as Dr. Jill Gideon, a brilliant biological psychiatrist and the ex-wife of Jason Gideon, a character originally portrayed by Mandy Patinkin in the early years of “Criminal Minds.”
Dr. Jill Gideon is initially hesitant to assist the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) in their investigation of a murderous conspiracy theory. Her reluctance stems from her complicated history with the bureau. However, she soon realizes that her unique skill set could be crucial in uncovering another clue to the elusive Gold Star mystery.
Fans of the original “Criminal Minds” series never met Gideon’s wife during Patinkin’s tenure on the show. Patinkin left the CBS series after 47 episodes, and his character was later killed offscreen by an UnSub. The introduction of Jill Gideon adds a new layer of depth and intrigue to the storyline, especially for long-time viewers.
The series regulars for “Criminal Minds: Evolution” include Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Zach Gilford, Ryan-James Hatanaka, Adam Rodriguez, and Paget Brewster. The show is produced by ABC Signature and CBS Studios.
“Criminal Minds: Evolution” is a continuation of the CBS series that aired from 2005 to 2020. In its first season on Paramount+, the BAU faced their greatest threat yet: an UnSub who used the pandemic to build a network of serial killers. As the world reopened, the network became operational, and the team was tasked with hunting them down, one murder at a time.
The return of “Criminal Minds: Evolution” for its second season has generated excitement among fans, particularly with the intriguing introduction of Jason Gideon’s ex-wife into the storyline. As the BAU delves into the mysteries surrounding Gold Star, showrunner Erica Messer has provided exciting details on how this new character will fit into the evolving narrative.
Season 2, set to premiere on June 6, largely retains its core cast from the debut season. However, notable additions include Clark Gregg as the new FBI chief and, most intriguingly, Felicity Huffman as Jill, Gideon’s ex-wife. Messer has revealed that Jill’s character will play a significant role in the BAU’s latest case, intertwining professional expertise with personal connections, particularly with veteran agent Dave Rossi.
In an interview with TV Insider, Erica Messer discussed how Jill’s character was conceptualized and integrated into the show’s storyline. Jill’s introduction not only adds a layer of complexity to the BAU’s investigative dynamics but also revives historical connections within the series.
“I always felt like that character existed in an early version of the pilot that never aired. We never saw her, but talking about Gideon’s ex-wife felt compelling. Once we cast Felicity Huffman, we crafted a three-episode arc that’s incredibly compelling. She’s brilliant and her role is open-ended, suggesting future appearances,” Messer explained.
Jill’s arrival is set to impact Rossi’s personal life significantly. According to Messer, Jill broke Rossi’s heart decades ago, adding a personal twist to her professional involvement in the current BAU case. This dual impact—professional and personal—makes her character particularly fascinating.
Joe Mantegna, who plays Rossi, hinted at this emotional entanglement: “Prentiss learns that Jill broke his heart. That’s all I’m going to say,” he remarked.
Rossi’s love life has been a recurring theme in “Criminal Minds,” with his multiple marriages and the tragic death of his last wife, Krystall, during the pandemic. Jill’s reintroduction could potentially rekindle old flames and shift Rossi’s narrative arc in unexpected ways. The possibility of Rossi revisiting his relationship with Jill adds a fresh dimension to the show’s storytelling.
Given the show’s history of using flashbacks to deepen character backstories, it’s plausible that “Criminal Minds: Evolution” might explore Gideon’s past through this lens. Previously, Ben Savage portrayed a young Gideon, and similar techniques could be employed to reveal the history between Jill and Rossi. This approach not only enriches the current narrative but also honors the legacy of Gideon’s character.
The sixteenth season of the American police procedural crime drama television series “Criminal Minds,” subtitled “Evolution,” tracks the members of the BAU as they confront a network of serial killers formed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This season marks a revival of the 2005 series, which concluded in 2020.
Initially, there was confusion regarding the absence of Matthew Gray Gubler’s character, Reid, from “Criminal Minds: Evolution” during its debut. At first, Gubler’s non-involvement was attributed to his personal decision to take a break from the show and pursue other opportunities. However, it was later disclosed that scheduling conflicts were the actual reason for his absence.
As the wait for “Criminal Minds: Evolution” season 2 continues, Deadline reports that Felicity Huffman has joined the show as Dr. Jill Gideon. Dr. Gideon, a biological psychiatrist, is initially reluctant to join the BAU due to her complicated history with the team, but she soon comes to realize that her skills could be crucial to getting to the bottom of the Gold Star case. Patinkin’s Gideon was a main character in the original iteration of the show, but he was killed off during season 10.
In addition to Huffman, the “Criminal Minds: Evolution” season 2 cast is expected to include a number of familiar faces from season 1. The debut outing for the revival follows the team as they track down an unsub who has used the pandemic to create a network of other serial killers. This unsub, who is revealed to be Elias Voit (Zach Gilford), will be returning in season 2.
The “Criminal Minds: Evolution” season 1 finale sees Voit in custody, but the work of the BAU isn’t over yet, as there’s still work to be done to ensure he ends up behind bars. This work will be carried out by the central team, which includes A.J. Cook as JJ, Kirsten Vangsness as Penelope Garcia, Aisha Tyler as Dr. Tara Lewis, Ryan-James Hatanaka as Tyler Green, Adam Rodriguez as Luke Alvez, Paget Brewster as Emily Prentiss, and Joe Mantegna as David Rossi.
One character who is unlikely to return is Nicholas D’Agosto’s Doug Bailey, who Voit shockingly kills during the events of season 1. It still remains unclear, however, whether original “Criminal Minds” characters like Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) and Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore) will return.
