ERC has informed PSC that it will withdraw from negotiations if a “fiscal sovereignty agreement” allowing Catalonia to collect, manage, and settle taxes is not reached.
This message was conveyed in an opinion piece published in ‘La Vanguardia’ and reported by Europa Press, co-authored by the ERC negotiation team, including Deputy Secretary General Marta Vilalta, National Council President Josep Maria Jové, Parliament Deputy Juli Fernàndez, and Internal Coordination Deputy Secretary General Oriol López.
The republican leaders are calling on the socialists to take a “giant step” towards agreeing on unique funding and have dismissed the taxation consortium mentioned in the Statute, labeling it as a mere cosmetic change that would leave everything unchanged.
They are adamant about not accepting vague “promises of funding” that lack specificity. They demand a structural model change, asserting that they cannot support a government that, in their words, abandons the goal of addressing the fiscal deficit impeding social and economic progress in Catalonia.
ERC believes that Catalonia voted for a new political cycle in the elections held on May 12, which compels them to maintain their position in the opposition. However, they acknowledge their crucial role in the current electoral arithmetic.
Republican negotiators emphasize that the previous legislative term marked the end of “repression” through pardons and amnesty. They assert that the next phase should focus on fiscal sovereignty and resolving the political conflict between Catalonia and the rest of Spain, and they remain firm in their insistence on a referendum.
