Sharon Stone believes that streaming has had a positive impact on Hollywood. The 66-year-old actress argues that streaming platforms have been crucial in keeping mid-budget films alive while major studios shift their focus to blockbuster productions.
While speaking at the Taormina Film Festival, where she received the Golden Cariddi Lifetime Achievement Award, Sharon shared her thoughts with Variety. She remarked, “The world has changed radically since 1992. When I did ‘Basic Instinct,’ it seemed like a scandal. Studios have drastically shifted from producing a wide variety of films to focusing primarily on gigantic movies costing 100 to 200 million dollars. When I made those beautiful films 30 years ago, the budgets were around 50 to 60 million at most. Now, streaming services are taking over our industry. I don’t think that’s a terrible thing. We are starting to see more smaller and relevant films again.”
Sharon highlighted that women now have greater opportunities to write, direct, and produce films. She said, “I must say that now that women are increasingly involved in writing, producing, and participating in cinema, films no longer revolve around men writing about their fantasies regarding women. Actors are also not just required to embody male fantasies, and critics are less focused on whether we fulfill those fantasies. The landscape has changed so much. It’s not about whether we measure up to a male-centric narrative anymore; it’s more about whether we are addressing the human condition.”
In her view, this evolution in storytelling reflects a broader shift in the industry that is unlikely to revert. “It has moved beyond traditional cinema and found its place in television,” she explained. “None of us would be here if sexuality and the complexities of being human weren’t natural aspects of our existence.”
