The FBI has identified a man believed to have attempted to assassinate Donald Trump this past Saturday. During a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, the presidential candidate was shot in the ear when an armed assailant opened fire. Authorities investigating the incident have revealed the name of the individual they believe is responsible, who was shot dead on the scene by Secret Service agents.
In a statement, the FBI announced, "The FBI has identified Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, as the subject involved in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump on July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania. This remains an active investigation, and anyone with information that might assist the investigation is encouraged to submit photos or videos online at FBI.gov/butler or call 1-800-CALL-FBI."
CNN previously reported that the individual authorities consider responsible was a registered Republican, who had made a small contribution to the Progressive Turnout Project, a Democratic-aligned group.
Meanwhile, the ex-president’s campaign officials have assured that the Republican National Convention will proceed as planned, where they will nominate their candidate to be a courageous and fearless representative of the party. However, they are implementing additional security measures for the event in Milwaukee.
Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita expressed to their staff in a memorandum that they are "still horrified" by the events. They added, "We hope this horrendous act will unite our team, and indeed the nation, in solidarity, and we must renew our commitment to security and peace for our country. We condemn all forms of violence and will not tolerate dangerous rhetoric on social media. In times of tragedy and horror, we must remain steadfast in our mission to reelect President Trump."
