Since becoming a father, Zayn Malik’s outlook on life has completely transformed. The former member of One Direction has come to terms with his past as a boyband star and has shown a more human side while promoting his new album, Room Under The Stairs. This shift in perspective largely stems from his daughter, Khai, whom he shares with ex-partner Gigi Hadid. At just three years old, Khai has become Zayn’s pride and joy. He credits her with helping him move past his rebellious teenage years, during which he felt trapped in a "cloud of negative energy." Now, he tries to see the glass as "half full."
Zayn recently revealed that Khai has just started to grasp the concept of his profession. Every time she hears one of his songs, she has an adorable question for onlookers: "Is my ‘baba’ singing?" In an interview with Haper’s Bazaar India, Zayn couldn’t hide his pride for his daughter as he shared this sweet story.
He is fully aware that time flies and makes a point to cherish every moment with Khai. "Everything happens so fast!" he remarked, reflecting on how quickly she is growing up since her birth in September 2020. "Being a father has inspired me and made me a better human. My daughter is my entire life, and she has given me purpose,” he confessed.
When it comes to Khai’s budding musical abilities, Zayn noted that she not only learns the lyrics to his songs but also has a natural rhythm. "She’s not an expert, but she has a bit of rhythm when she plays the drums and things like that," he said on The Zach Sang Show. Interestingly, it seems she may have inherited this talent from her mother. Zayn recalled that Gigi was quite skilled at playing the drums in Guitar Hero, and he often found himself losing to her.
Zayn and Gigi’s relationship faced challenges, particularly when they broke up in 2021 while Khai was only one year old. This was following an altercation involving Yolanda Hadid, Gigi’s mother, who reported him for assault. Though he typically keeps his personal life private, Zayn released a statement at the time expressing his desire to maintain privacy and to be a good father while denying various allegations and stating that the incident was "private and should remain so." He accepted charges related to four counts of harassment, leading to a fine and 360 days of probation, along with completing anger management and domestic violence courses.
Since then, Zayn and Gigi have managed to co-parent effectively, sharing custody of their daughter, and their relationship has improved for Khai’s sake. "We have a great relationship concerning Khai. She is the most important thing, so everything is going well," he revealed on Alex Cooper’s podcast, Call Her Daddy.
