Kesha Felt She Lost Control Over Herself During Her Legal Battle with Dr. Luke

Kesha felt that she "lost the rights to herself" during her legal battle against Dr. Luke. The 37-year-old singer parted ways with Kemosabe, which operates under RCA Records, in December. This decision came six months after her long struggle against the producer ended. She reflected on how, shortly after signing her contract with him in the late 2000s, she faced intense emotions while writing hits like "Tik Tok."

In a TED talk, Kesha shared, "I had a very ugly litigation with the same person to whom I signed over the rights to my recorded voice. I lost the rights to my voice, and it felt like I lost rights to myself." The experience was very public and painful, leaving her filled with anger. In her typical way of coping, she channeled those feelings into songwriting. "On March 6, 2024, I regained the legal rights to my own voice. With that, I found freedom for the first time in nearly 20 years. It’s interesting how you can lose the rights to your own voice, but you can never lose the right to your truth," she expressed later.

Kesha, known for her hit "Joyride," had previously sued Dr. Luke for various serious allegations, including sexual assault, emotional abuse, and violations of California business practices. Her legal battle continued until March 2024 before finally reaching a resolution. She realized that whenever she feels exceptionally emotional, she needs to write a song. "Songwriting is a direct line of communication to the truth. In a song, you can express things you can’t say out loud to anyone—your friends, therapist, or even your mother. When I feel something intensely, I know it’s time to write a song," she explained.

For years, Kesha and Dr. Luke, who is now 50, were entrenched in a legal conflict following Kesha’s allegations that he drugged and raped her after a party in 2005. Dr. Luke denied these accusations and countersued for defamation. However, in June of last year, the two reached an out-of-court settlement after nearly ten years of disputes, just weeks before the trial was set to begin.

In a joint statement shared on Kesha’s Instagram stories, both parties announced, "Kesha and Dr. Luke have agreed to resolve the lawsuit, and they have agreed to issue and publish a joint statement regarding that resolution."

This resolution marks a significant turn in Kesha’s journey toward reclaiming her voice and her autonomy in the music industry.
