The Minions are set to return to theaters in 2027. The third installment of the beloved “Despicable Me” prequel series is scheduled for release on June 30, 2027, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Pierre Coffin will direct the film and has been the voice behind the iconic yellow creatures since their big-screen debut in 2010. This announcement comes on the heels of the success of “Despicable Me 4,” which has grossed over $269.3 million globally since its release on July 3, according to data from Box Office Mojo. Additionally, “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” released in 2022, raked in a staggering $940.7 million.
In this upcoming film, Will Ferrell will reprise his role as Maxime Le Mal, while Steve Carell returns as Gru and Kristen Wiig as Lucy Wilde. Joey King will portray Poppy Prescott, and Sofia Vergara will play Valentina, the femme fatale partner of Maxime.
Director Chris Renaud expressed a desire to have Will lend his voice to the villain, citing him as a “wonderful character creator.” Renaud, who has returned to the franchise after directing the original film in 2010 and its sequel in 2013, has always aimed to work with Ferrell. He mentioned that the team often hires alumni from “Saturday Night Live” because they are quick to generate ideas for their characters.
When asked about Ferrell’s casting as Maxime Le Mal, Renaud told The Hollywood Reporter, “Personally, I’ve always wanted to work with him. I’m a huge fan of his work and characters. It’s no accident that we look to ‘Saturday Night Live’ talent—Chloe Fineman has a role in the film—because they are exceptional character creators and can deliver in a short timeframe. Who does it better than Will? He came in with that great French accent.”
