Robin Roberts once felt “afraid” to come out as a lesbian. The 63-year-old television host tied the knot with 48-year-old massage therapist Amber Laign last summer, after nearly 20 years of dating. Roberts had been leading ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ for almost a decade when she publicly announced her sexual orientation in 2013. She revealed that she hesitated to make the announcement due to her well-known religious beliefs.
During an episode of the podcast ‘The Jamie Kern Lima Show’, she shared a poignant moment: “I would walk down the street with Amber, and if someone saw us, I would introduce her. I wasn’t trying to hide, but I wasn’t ready to… Part of that, and I’ve never said this before, is because of my Christianity. I was afraid people would think that you can’t be gay and Christian. But I am. I am, and I was so scared of being rejected.”
Reflecting on her past, Robin now thinks about all the “lost years” she spent worrying about others’ opinions and feels “so grateful” for her current state of life. She expressed, “Then I think about all those years I wasted, worried, unnecessarily worried. They know everything about me. I have nothing to hide. I am blessed and very fortunate. I am so thankful to be accepted as I am.”
The former ESPN reporter proudly announced her marriage on Instagram, sharing a moment where both brides appeared hand-in-hand in their white wedding dresses. Regarding the ceremony, Robin wrote, “An intimate and magical wedding ceremony in our backyard, followed by a joyous reception… ohhh the dancing!!!”
