On Saturday, the Turkish Ministry of Defense reported that the Armed Forces “neutralized” seven members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and related organizations during operations in Syria and Iraq.
According to the announcement, three PKK terrorists were detected and neutralized in the Asos region of northern Iraq, while four PKK/YPG (People’s Protection Units) terrorists were targeted in the Euphrates Shield and Peace Spring regions in northern Syria.
The Ministry’s statement was accompanied by a video that showed various artillery strikes, missile launches, and the takeoff of an F-16 fighter jet, along with the deployment of multiple surface-to-air missiles. The heavy military equipment used in the operations suggests that the neutralized PKK members may have suffered fatal consequences.
Since the PKK began its armed struggle in 1984, aiming for independence for the predominantly Kurdish southeast of Turkey, violence has led to the deaths of over 40,000 individuals. The current military operation by Turkey has extended into northern Iraq as well as northern and northeastern Syria.
