A 22-year-old policewoman shot and killed her 25-year-old boyfriend during a camping trip in Zárate, a town in Buenos Aires Province. They were on vacation alongside the victim’s father and a friend. Following the incident, the young woman was arrested and is facing charges of aggravated homicide due to their relationship.
The event unfolded at a campsite situated in the Paraná River delta. Milagros Ayelén Ortiz, who serves in the Immediate Tactical Operations Unit (UTOI) of Lanús, began arguing with her partner, Alejandro Barreto. Witnesses reported that the discussion escalated into a physical altercation. Alejandro’s father intervened, shouting for them to stop, but the argument did not subside.
In a moment of rage, Ortiz went to their car, retrieved her service weapon, and returned to the riverbank, where she shot Alejandro twice. His father, shocked by the sudden turn of events, quickly helped Alejandro and a friend get him to a nearby Gendarmería Nacional Argentina post on National Route 12.
An ambulance arrived minutes later, but the situation was dire. Medical personnel performed CPR and rushed him to a hospital, where it was confirmed that Alejandro had died before arrival. Reports indicate that one of the bullets struck him near the heart.
While this was happening, Ortiz informed the Gendarmería officers about the incident and handed over her weapon, resulting in her immediate arrest.
The murder occurred last Friday, but news of it became public on Monday. Alejandro’s sister mentioned that this was not the first time Ortiz had threatened him. She asserted that Ortiz often wanted to keep him away from his family, knowing that disputes would inevitably lead to familial intervention. She recounted a distressing incident from late June when she had to intervene after Ortiz physically assaulted Alejandro.
The sister expressed that they always defended Alejandro from Ortiz’s abuse and recalled several instances when discussions spiraled out of control. She explained that despite the aggression, Alejandro never retaliated. Regarding their relationship, she revealed that they had been together for over a year but had been on and off, with Ortiz often leaving only to reconcile. She concluded that Ortiz was very possessive and, while Alejandro might have genuinely cared for her, she did not reciprocate those feelings.
