On the night of July 22, 2024, the strike committee from the Ministry of Labor sent a letter to President Gustavo Petro. In this correspondence, they highlighted alleged acts of violence attributed to the ministry’s management and requested that the government appoint an official to communicate with the striking workers.
The letter expressed that the situation within the Ministry of Labor had reached a critical point. It pointed out that there have been incidents of violence by the ministry’s executives against the striking workers, which has replaced the necessary dialogue with repressive measures.
In light of this troubling context, the committee emphasized the need for a resolution through dialogue that could address the interests of both the ministry and the strikers. They called on the President to designate a government representative for discussions.
“We request your intervention to appoint Dr. Edwin Palma, Deputy Minister of Labor Relations and Inspection, as the government’s interlocutor in this conflict,” the document stated.
The committee justified this request by noting that Palma’s experience and skills could help steer the situation back toward a constructive dialogue, thereby avoiding the use of force and ensuring that workers’ rights are respected.
Further developments on this situation are expected.
