Rebel Wilson is facing a defamation lawsuit. The 44-year-old actress was sued after she accused the producers of her upcoming film, “The Deb,” of preventing its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Earlier this week, Rebel posted a video on her Instagram account, where she criticized producers Amanda Ghost, Gregor Cameron, and executive producer Vince Holden. She accused them of exhibiting “misconduct” on set and claimed they misappropriated funds from the film. She labeled their behavior as “vile and disgusting,” stating she encountered “absolute vileness and retaliatory behavior” after raising concerns about their actions.
In response, the trio has denied all allegations and filed a countersuit in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE magazine, they claim, “She flatly refused to collaborate with the plaintiffs, was absent from the film for months, acted unprofessionally towards the film’s staff, and repeatedly made unauthorized, improper disclosures about the movie. Rebel’s aim in these various disputes was to claim credit for work she hadn’t done and overshadow young, deserving artists who should have received that credit. We had to carefully consider whether to proceed with marketing the film while it was embroiled in numerous credit and licensing disputes instigated by Rebel. We continuously tried to resolve the disputes in good faith, but Rebel had other intentions. Although the plan was always to screen the movie at TIFF, Rebel attempted to coerce us and intimidate us into capitulating to her unreasonable demands, leveraging her popularity on social media to spread these malicious, unfounded lies about [the producers] to her 11 million Instagram followers. This was a vindictive attempt to destroy [the producers’] reputation with what she knew were demonstrably false statements.”
In response to the lawsuit, Wilson took to Instagram, stating, “It’s not defamation if it’s the TRUTH (those ‘producers’ I mentioned in my last post just filed a defamation lawsuit against me and sent it to the press)! Let our awesome movie play in Toronto and stop messing around with a garbage defamation lawsuit against me!”
