VIDEO: Pedro Sánchez tells Olympians and Paralympians in Paris to “live the greatest dream”

On Tuesday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez welcomed a delegation of athletes at the Palace of La Moncloa. These athletes are set to compete in the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris, an opportunity that Sánchez described as “the greatest dream” and a unique human and sporting experience.

Sánchez emphasized that they are about to embark on a remarkable journey, one that will stay with them for a lifetime. He praised the eloquence of the words spoken by shooter Fátima Gálvez and judoka Marta Arce, noting how they encapsulate the emotions shared by all athletes and the hopes riding on these Games. He also expressed how proud all Spanish citizens are to have them represent the nation, regardless of the competition’s outcomes.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the athletes’ focus on competing and winning but reminded them that their true honor lies in representing Spain on such a grand stage. He highlighted that the hard work has already been accomplished, as each athlete embodies a story filled with effort, sacrifice, commitment, and passion—essential elements of sports. He also stressed the critical role of family and community support throughout their journeys, underlining that no athlete achieves success alone.

Sánchez celebrated the inclusion of 192 female athletes alongside 190 male competitors, noting the significance of gender parity achieved after 33 Olympic Games. He addressed the Paralympic athletes, mentioning the historical progress made by equalizing their financial rewards with those of the Olympic competitors.

“You represent a modern, democratic Spain that is supportive, respectful, open, and tolerant,” Sánchez stated, highlighting how sports have become a symbol of national recognition globally. He drew a connection between Spain’s democratic evolution since 1978 and the remarkable tally of medals—100 Olympic and 687 Paralympic medals—earned since then.

He commended the contributions of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), the Paralympic Committee (CPE), and various governmental organizations that have established Spain as a worldwide sports benchmark. Through initiatives like ‘Team España,’ the government has continued to enhance support for athletes.

“You repay that investment with unparalleled reputation but even more so, with emotional returns,” Sánchez remarked, acknowledging the inspiration athletes provide to the youth watching diligently at home. He encouraged the athletes to give their all, expressing confidence that they would serve as exemplary representatives of Spain. “No matter how you place, the satisfaction of having participated and worn Spain’s uniform at the Games will always belong to you.”

He concluded by wishing them the best of luck in their pursuits, reminding them to cherish the unforgettable moments they will share in Paris.

Alejandro Blanco, the president of the COE, reflected on the significance of their presence in Paris, noting that they are likely the first Olympic committee to achieve near gender parity. Blanco expressed confidence in the athletes’ ability to exemplify the values of equality and inclusion that sports promote. He acknowledged the long-held dreams they carry and thanked families and the government for their unwavering support in preparing the athletes.

Miguel Carballeda, president of the CPE, highlighted the unity among athletes and expressed gratitude towards the government for finally affording equal recognition to all athletes, regardless of disability. He articulated shared determination among both Olympic and Paralympic athletes to bring pride to Spain by competing with passion and aim for a successful medal haul.

Judoka Marta Arce, speaking on behalf of the Paralympic athletes, characterized the occasion as a significant achievement in equal representation. She expressed her honor at receiving such recognition and noted the progress made in bringing all athletes together as one team.

Fátima Gálvez, representing the Olympic contingent, concluded by acknowledging the challenges they have faced. She underlined that their ambition goes beyond winning medals; they strive to inspire all Spaniards through their commitment and pride.
