Nicole Kidman Believes Stanley Kubrick Sabotaged Her Marriage to Tom Cruise for ‘Eyes Wide Shut’

Nicole Kidman believes that Stanley Kubrick meticulously "mined" her marriage to Tom Cruise for inspiration while working on his film, Eyes Wide Shut.

The Oscar-winning actress, now 57, starred alongside Tom, 62, in the 1999 film where she played the wife of Dr. Bill Hartford, a role taken by Tom. The plot twist occurs when she reveals to him that she fantasizes about being with another man, leading him into a dark world of orgies and rituals conducted by the elite and powerful.

Nicole married Tom nine years before the film’s release, and they divorced in 2001. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times to mark the 25th anniversary of the film, she discussed whether Stanley drew from their marriage for the project. She replied, "I suppose so. There were ideas that intrigued him; he asked a lot of questions. But he had a strong vision for the story he was telling. I remember he would say, ‘Triangles are difficult. You need to be careful with a triangle because one person can feel overwhelmed.’ However, he knew how to handle us."

She emphasized that she never felt "overwhelmed," as she and Tom had different relationships with Stanley. "There’s also something about being a woman in that equation. Stanley liked women, and he had a different dynamic with Tom. They worked more on his character," she noted.

Fans have speculated that filming the intense scenes, which delved into the couple’s complex dynamics, strained the stars’ marriage. Nicole mentioned that they spent weeks shooting one challenging scene that was ultimately cut from the film.

She recounted, "It was the scene where Tom and I start by smoking a joint in bed, and I laugh and deliver a long monologue. It took us many weeks. A lot of it was rehearsing in the bedroom, and Tom wasn’t happy with what we had done. So we reworked it, building it as we went along. There was no need to rush. Stanley never went over budget; he was buying time. Tom and I began working with Stanley at his house, and we didn’t even go to the Pinewood sets. Six to eight weeks passed, and we were asking ourselves, ‘Are we ever going to start?’ It just never happened. We felt comfortable enough with each other to throw around ideas. For that scene, we improvised the beginning during rehearsals."

Upon its release, Eyes Wide Shut received mixed reviews from critics but has since gained a cult following. It marked Kubrick’s final film before his death on March 7, 1999, at the age of 70.
