Antonio Villaraigosa, the former mayor of Los Angeles and the first Latino to hold that position, has declared his candidacy for the governor’s office of California in 2026. This marks his second attempt to lead the Golden State. The announcement was made through a video posted on YouTube, where the 71-year-old highlighted his extensive experience in addressing problems and his ability to foster collaboration between Democrats and Republicans.
In his video, Villaraigosa emphasized his track record of enhancing public safety, education, and balancing budgets during his two terms as mayor from 2005 to 2013. He faced significant challenges, notably the Great Recession of 2008, and prioritized strengthening the Los Angeles Police Department.
Villaraigosa also pointed to his leadership role in the California Assembly, where he served as president. He expressed a desire to return to the basics of governance, focusing on reducing costs for small businesses and providing support for middle-income families.
"The public is more interested in what you can do for them," Villaraigosa noted in his announcement. "The best way to show them is by reflecting on what you’ve accomplished in the past."
Born in Los Angeles to Mexican roots, Villaraigosa first attempted to run for governor in 2018 but finished third in the Democratic primaries, which were ultimately won by Gavin Newsom. Newsom is set to leave office in 2026.
Several prominent Democrats have already entered the race to succeed him, including Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, State Senator Toni Atkins, and former State Controller Betty Yee.
As California, the fifth-largest economy in the world, prepares for a new governor, Villaraigosa’s candidacy is sure to reignite discussions about the future leadership of the state.
