Fuerza Popular has made a decision regarding its congressional representation and has outlined its target position for the upcoming Board of Directors in the Congress of the Republic. In a recent meeting held, Patricia Juárez’s candidacy was confirmed as the successor to Alejandro Soto. This decision received prior approval from key figures such as Keiko Fujimori, Luis Galarreta, and Miguel Torres.
The announcement was communicated to the Alianza para el Progreso to determine which legislator will join the candidacy. While Lady Camones and Alejandro Soto were considered strong contenders, it was reported that Eduardo Salhuana was chosen as the first vice president this morning.
In addition, Alejandro Cavero from Avanza País is set to accompany the Bloque Democrático as the third vice president. The option from Perú Libre remains undecided, with Kelly Portalatino and Américo Gonza ruled out due to ongoing investigations by the Public Ministry, which may favor Flavio Cruz for the position.
The Congress is set to elect its Board of Directors for the annual session period of 2024-2025 on Friday, July 26. The session will commence at 10:00 AM in the Congress’s Hemicycle of Sessions as stipulated in the presidential decree signed by Alejandro Soto Reyes, the current president of the Legislative body.
According to the legislative regulations, candidate lists must be submitted to the Congressional Office at least 24 hours before the election, which means they are due by 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 25. During the electoral session, candidate lists will be read aloud, and the outgoing Board will appoint two congress members as scrutineers to ensure a fair process. These scrutineers, along with the Board members and the outgoing president, will cast the first votes.
The session will briefly pause to allow parliamentarians to complete their ballots. Voting will proceed alphabetically, and once voting closes, a vote-by-vote count will take place with the assistance of the scrutineers. The list that secures a simple majority will be declared the winner; should no list achieve a majority, a second vote will be conducted between the two lists that received the most votes.
