Kim Cattrall has confirmed that she will not be reprising her role as Samantha Jones in the third season of ‘Sex and the City.’ When a fan inquired about her return to the franchise, she kindly responded, “Aw, you’re very sweet, but no.”
Cattrall’s departure from ‘Sex and the City’ came after a long and successful run. In a 2021 interview with Variety, she revealed that she found her character’s portrayal to be “heartbreaking,” particularly after being dissatisfied with the script for a proposed third movie. She expressed that it felt overwhelming to play the same character for so many years.
She remarked, “Everything has to grow or die. When the series ended, I thought, ‘How clever, we’re not going to repeat ourselves.’ Then came the movie to tie up loose ends. And then another movie. And then another?” She officially stepped away from ‘Sex and the City’ in 2010.
Cattrall also emphasized her desire to protect her character, stating, “It takes great wisdom to know when enough is enough. I didn’t want to compromise what the series meant to me. The direction forward seemed clear. I portrayed and loved Samantha. Ultimately, I felt I needed to protect her.”
In another interview, the 67-year-old actress made it clear that she would not be returning for ‘And Just Like That.’ Her last appearance in the franchise was in the second ‘Sex and the City’ movie in 2010, although she did make a cameo in the 2023 spin-off.
Rumors have circulated that Cattrall’s reluctance to continue with the franchise is linked to a supposed feud with Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays Carrie Bradshaw. During her cameo, it was speculated that Cattrall set certain conditions, including a desire to avoid scenes with Parker and fellow cast members Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis.
Reports suggested that Cattrall even requested that Michael Patrick King, the show’s writer, not be present on set during her recording. Allegedly, tensions between Cattrall and Parker began when the latter expressed condolences in various media outlets, which Cattrall reportedly interpreted as an exploitation of her family tragedy.
