The financial challenges faced by public universities in Argentina have been ongoing for several years. Despite these issues, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) remains prestigious, not only nationally but also on a global scale.
A British consulting firm recently published a list of the world’s top universities, placing Argentina’s UBA at the 42nd spot, making it the best university in Latin America. This ranking is not well received by authoritarian figures.
Professional and critical journalism is a fundamental pillar of democracy, which can be unsettling for those who believe they hold the ultimate truth. In the report, UBA was followed closely by universities in Santiago de Chile, Mexico City, São Paulo, and Bogotá. Notably, Argentina held the top position in Latin America for eight consecutive years, but it dropped to 95th place last year, allowing the University of São Paulo to claim the highest ranking.
This year, UBA has managed to regain its educational standing despite ongoing challenges. Among the 150 top institutions listed, the three best universities globally are located in London, Tokyo, and Seoul in South Korea.
