The Israeli Defense Forces recently announced the recovery of five bodies from Gaza, which belonged to individuals taken hostage during Hamas’s attack on October 7. This operation, conducted on Thursday, resulted in the retrieval of the remains of Maya Goren and four soldiers: Ravid Aryeh Katz, Oren Goldin, Tomer Ahimas, and Kiril Brodski.
The military stated that this operation took place in Khan Yunis, located in southern Gaza. The bodies of the four soldiers who lost their lives during the October 7 assault, along with Goren’s remains, were recovered. Maya Goren had been kidnapped during the attack, and her death was previously announced by the army in December. Her husband, Avner Goren, was also killed in the incident.
Two Israeli kibbutzim, Nir Oz and Nir Yitzhak, confirmed the recovery of Goren’s and Goldin’s bodies in separate statements. Nir Oz mentioned that the family had been informed about the military rescue operation that recovered Maya Goren’s body and that further details would be provided later.
Maya Goren, 56, will be buried alongside her husband, who was also 56, following his death during the attacks by Palestinian militias at their home, as reported by The Times of Israel.
Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak noted that Oren Goldin, a member of its emergency team, was also recovered during the rescue operation. The army had previously confirmed the deaths of two other hostages, Alex Danzig and Yagev Buchshtab. Their bodies are still in the custody of Hamas in Gaza, with indications that they may have died from Israeli airstrikes.
The Israeli military stated that their determination regarding the deaths of the two hostages was based on intelligence information. They highlighted ongoing efforts to gather intelligence on hostages and continue supporting the families affected.
According to reports from the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Buchshtab was captured by Hamas in Nirim along with his wife, Rimon Kirsht Buchshtab, who was released at the end of November during a truce in Gaza.
The attack by Hamas on October 7 resulted in the deaths of 1,197 people, mostly civilians, according to official Israeli figures. A total of 251 individuals were taken hostage, with 111 believed to remain in Gaza, including 39 that the Israeli military suspects may be deceased.
Danzig was abducted at Nir Oz. Relatives of the deceased hostages expressed grief over the situation, suggesting they might have been saved if a different agreement had been reached. Yuval Danzig, one of Alex’s sons, shared his sorrow on Instagram, stating that his father was taken from their home and should have returned alive and intact.
Another of Alex’s sons, Mati Danzig, expressed his outrage, blaming the Israeli government for his father’s death and calling for public mobilization and protests. He accused Prime Minister Netanyahu of hindering any potential agreements and prioritizing his government over the lives of Israeli citizens. Mati emphasized that the sacrifice of hostages for political reasons reflects a severe failure, labeling it a betrayal.
