The Uruguayan rugby sevens team faced disappointment as they concluded their campaign in the fight for medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Their journey ended on Thursday after suffering a third loss in Group C, this time against the United States, with a score of 33-17.
Bautista Basso expressed his frustration in the mixed zone at the Stade de France, highlighting that their failure to capitalize on opportunities and numerous unforced errors led to their exit. “I’m a bit upset about not qualifying, primarily because we didn’t seize our chances, and we made a lot of mistakes,” he said. Despite the disappointment, Basso recognized the Olympic experience as invaluable, stating that just a few years ago he could not have imagined being there. The team, known as the ‘Teros,’ is still finding joy in their time in Paris.
Basso also noted the significance of participating in such high-level competitions for Uruguayan rugby, although he emphasized their desire to win. “We always focus on winning; we don’t like losing. I’m happy with the experience but also a little frustrated,” he summarized.
Guillermo Lijtenstein remarked that they prepared for the match as if it were a final, aiming for victory. He stated, “We had a strong first half, going toe-to-toe with them. In the second half, when we tried to play, we made mistakes. Against teams as good and quick as the United States, if you don’t capitalize on opportunities, they will take advantage of it.”
Looking ahead, even though the team’s highest aspiration is to finish ninth at the Paris 2024 Games, Lijtenstein highlighted the progress made by the squad throughout the tournament. “Our goal now is to improve match by match, continue developing as a team, and keep gaining experience,” he concluded.
