Spanish coach Albert Sánchez has been appointed as the new head coach of Barça Atlètic, FC Barcelona’s reserve team, until June 30, 2025. This announcement was made by the club through their official website and social media platforms.
At 37 years old, Sánchez takes over from Rafa Márquez, having served as his assistant for the past two seasons. During their tenure, the Barça Atlètic successfully reached the playoff stage for promotion to the Segunda División in both the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons. In the first season, the team reached the semifinals, while in the last season, they made it all the way to the final, just missing out on promotion. Despite not achieving this goal, the team met significant developmental objectives, with several players establishing themselves in the first team.
Prior to his time with Barça Atlètic, Sánchez was the assistant coach of the Juvenil A team during the 2021/22 season, under the guidance of Óscar López. That year, the Juvenil A achieved a remarkable double, winning both the Liga División de Honor and the Copa de Campeones, all while focusing on effective player development.
Sánchez brings international experience to his new role. He has worked as an assistant coach in China with Beijing Sports University during the 2018/19 season, in Kuwait with Qadsia SC in 2019/20—where he competed in the Asian Champions League and won the Super Cup—and as the head coach of the under-20 team at Al Fateh in Saudi Arabia in the 2020/21 season.
Now, Sánchez faces the challenge of leading Barça Atlètic as they continue their commitment to player development, ensuring that young talents are well-prepared for the transition to the first team.
