There’s an abundance of movies to enjoy on Hulu this weekend, particularly as we approach the end of July. With the recent release of “Deadpool & Wolverine” in theaters, we decided to highlight three films featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman from their respective filmographies. While their selections on Hulu may be limited, we’ve managed to curate a list that includes a romantic comedy starring Reynolds, an action-packed adventure featuring Jackman, and a gripping crime thriller that has just premiered.
First up is “The Proposal” (2009), a delightful rom-com that has become a fan favorite. In this film, Sandra Bullock plays Margaret Tate, a tough and demanding editor at a major publishing house. Her assistant, Andrew Paxton, portrayed by Ryan Reynolds, is not particularly fond of her. However, when Margaret faces the threat of deportation back to Canada, she turns to Andrew for help. The solution? A Green Card marriage.
As they navigate the complexities of their faux relationship, they must convince immigration agent Mr. Gilbertson, played by Denis O’Hare, that their union is genuine. The stakes are high, and the tension is palpable as Mr. Gilbertson grows suspicious of their intentions. Despite the business-like nature of their vows, sparks begin to fly between Margaret and Andrew. The question remains: can a marriage born out of necessity blossom into something real?
You can catch “The Proposal” streaming on Hulu.
Next on our list is “Van Helsing” (2004), a thrilling action-adventure film that showcases Hugh Jackman in the titular role. This film is a modern reimagining of the classic Universal Monsters franchise. Jackman stars as Gabriel Van Helsing, a legendary monster hunter with a mysterious past.
Sent by the Vatican to eliminate Count Dracula, played by Richard Roxburgh, Van Helsing soon discovers that the vampire’s plans extend far beyond mere bloodlust. Dracula has harnessed the technology of the infamous Dr. Frankenstein, and it’s up to Van Helsing, along with Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale) and Frankenstein’s Monster (Shuler Hensley), to thwart his evil schemes.
“Van Helsing” is a fun ride filled with action, adventure, and a touch of campiness. You can find it available for streaming on Hulu.
Lastly, we have “Sleeping Dogs” (2024), a crime thriller that has just made its debut on Hulu. This film features Russell Crowe as Roy Freeman, a former homicide detective grappling with the effects of severe Alzheimer’s disease.
As Roy undergoes a new memory therapy, he is drawn back into one of his old cases, which resulted in the wrongful imprisonment of an innocent man, Isaac Samuel. The plot thickens when Roy’s partner dies shortly after being asked to revisit the case, leading him to believe that Isaac may indeed be innocent.
As Roy delves deeper into his memories, he encounters Laura Baines, played by Karen Gillan, a mysterious woman with her own secrets. The film explores themes of memory, justice, and the quest for truth, making it a compelling watch for fans of crime dramas.
You can stream “Sleeping Dogs” on Hulu.
As the weekend approaches, these three films offer a mix of romance, action, and suspense that are perfect for a cozy movie night. Whether you’re in the mood for a light-hearted rom-com, an action-packed adventure, or a gripping thriller, Hulu has you covered.
So grab your popcorn, settle in, and enjoy these selections as you unwind this weekend.
