The historic Brooklyn Paramount Theatre, a beloved landmark in Fort Greene, is set to reopen its doors next month after an extensive restoration. The grand opening season will commence on March 27, 2024, with tickets already available for over 45 performances featuring a lineup of renowned artists, including Busta Rhymes, PinkPantheress, Norah Jones, and Mariah The Scientist, as announced by Live Nation.
Originally opened in 1928, the Brooklyn Paramount has a rich history as both a movie theater and a music venue. However, in 1962, it was taken over by Long Island University (LIU), which repurposed the space into a gymnasium, removing the stage and altering its original design. Despite these changes, the university preserved the theater’s stunning gilded latticework ceiling and transformed the upstairs office into academic space.
The recent restoration has breathed new life into the venue, allowing contemporary artists to perform on a stage that once hosted legendary figures such as Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Miles Davis. The renovation has meticulously preserved the theater’s Baroque details and iconic Rococo ceiling while incorporating modern upgrades to enhance the visitor experience. These updates include a new stage, a state-of-the-art backstage facility, seven bars for quick service, and an exclusive VIP lounge named “Ella’s VIP Lounge,” inspired by Ella Fitzgerald’s intimate performances in the 1950s.
Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso expressed his enthusiasm for the reopening, stating, “The reopening of the historic Brooklyn Paramount is the latest sign that Brooklyn’s art scene is thriving. I applaud Live Nation for renovating this historic venue where New Yorkers can enjoy the hottest performers right here in Brooklyn.” He emphasized that the reopening signifies that New York City can revitalize its entertainment scene without losing its historical essence.
The restoration project also includes the preservation of the theater’s famous Wurlitzer organ, one of only two models still in operation, with the other located in Radio City Music Hall. Plans to restore the Brooklyn Paramount to its former glory first emerged in 2015 when Mikhail Prokhorov’s Onexim announced a $50 million renovation plan. However, those plans were abandoned after Prokhorov sold the Brooklyn Nets and the arena company. The current cost of the restoration project has not been disclosed.
The planning, design, and construction of the restored venue took five years and employed over 500 local workers. Upon its reopening, the venue is expected to create more than 250 permanent jobs, offering a minimum wage of $20 per hour or more. Additionally, Live Nation is collaborating with LIU to provide internships and part-time job opportunities for students interested in pursuing careers in the music industry.
David Codiga, President of Blueprint Studio, Live Nation’s global design and development team, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to reimagine the Brooklyn Paramount. “Elevating the artist and fan experience is our top priority as we develop live music venues, and Brooklyn Paramount is a stunning space that will host many memorable shows,” he stated.
The reopening of the Brooklyn Paramount Theatre is not just a revival of a historic venue; it represents a broader commitment to preserving cultural landmarks in New York City. As the theater prepares to welcome audiences once again, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of live music and the importance of community spaces in fostering artistic expression.
The excitement surrounding the reopening has drawn support from various celebrities and artists who recognize the significance of the Brooklyn Paramount in the cultural landscape of New York City. Many have expressed their eagerness to perform at the venue and contribute to its legacy.
As the theater gears up for its grand reopening, it is poised to become a vibrant hub for music and entertainment, attracting both local residents and visitors from around the world. The combination of its historical charm and modern amenities promises to create an unforgettable experience for concertgoers.
In addition to hosting concerts, the Brooklyn Paramount will also serve as a venue for community and private events, further solidifying its role as a cultural cornerstone in the neighborhood. The theater’s restoration is a significant step toward revitalizing the arts scene in Brooklyn and ensuring that future generations can enjoy the magic of live performances in a historic setting.
As the countdown to the grand opening begins, anticipation continues to build among fans and artists alike. The Brooklyn Paramount Theatre is ready to reclaim its place in the hearts of music lovers and become a beacon of creativity and entertainment in New York City once again.
