French filmmaker Marie Losier is set to unveil her latest documentary, “Peaches Goes Bananas,” at the Giornate degli Autori during the 81st Venice Film Festival, taking place from August 28 to September 7, 2024. This marks Losier’s third feature film, following her previous works showcased at prestigious festivals like Berlin and Cannes.
“Peaches Goes Bananas” offers an intimate glimpse into the life of Canadian singer and performer Peaches, known for her vibrant electropunk style and her status as a feminist and queer icon. Losier has been documenting Peaches since 2006, capturing a transformative period in her career. The film explores the duality of Peaches’ life, highlighting her artistic brilliance while also revealing the personal challenges she faces, particularly her role as a caregiver for her sister, who is battling a serious degenerative illness.
Losier’s fascination with Peaches stems from her relentless energy and her ability to challenge societal norms. “Where does she get this boundless, exuberant energy from?” Losier ponders. “This film takes an intimate look behind the scenes at Peaches’ playful, intoxicating, and explosive creative world.”
The production of “Peaches Goes Bananas” is a collaboration between Tamara Films, led by Carole Chassaing, and Michigan Films, represented by Alice Lemaire. The project has received substantial support from various organizations, including the Grand Est region, the CNC, Sacem, and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation Film and Audiovisual Centre. Additionally, it benefits from the Belgian federal government’s tax shelter.
The film was previously presented in the Work in Progress strand at the Les Arcs Film Festival in late 2023 and at the ParisDoc work-in-progress platform during the Cinéma du Réel festival in the spring. Norte Distribution will handle the film’s theatrical release in France.
Tamara Films has a history of producing notable titles, including “Astrakan” by David Depesseville, which was featured in the Cineasti del presente section at the Locarno Film Festival in 2022, and Losier’s previous film, “Cassandro the Exotico!”
As “Peaches Goes Bananas” prepares for its world premiere, anticipation builds for a documentary that promises to be both a celebration of artistic expression and a poignant exploration of personal resilience.
