The video features a confrontation between a Black man, Ricky Johnson, and a white man in Virginia City, where the latter allegedly directed a racial slur at Johnson and made a chilling reference to a “hanging tree” for people like him.
The incident occurred on August 2, during the Hot August Nights classic car event, which attracts thousands of visitors to the historic town. Johnson, who was in Virginia City to collect signatures for a ballot measure, recorded part of the confrontation and later shared it on social media. The video quickly garnered widespread condemnation from local and state officials.
“I’m still shaking every time I think about it,” Johnson expressed in a phone interview as he prepared to return to his home in Houston, Texas. He described the encounter as particularly unsettling, noting that he has faced racial slurs before, but this incident felt different. “To be actually in the middle of that and you have no way out… I felt closed in,” he said.
Storey County Undersheriff Eric Kern confirmed that the sheriff’s office has completed interviews with Johnson and potential suspects. The case has now been forwarded to the district attorney for consideration of any charges. Kern indicated that the investigation is taking the possibility of a hate crime into account, stating, “As far as a hate crime, it could be an element. There is an enhancement we are looking at.”

Johnson was working for Advanced Micro Targeting Inc., a Texas-based company focused on voter outreach, when the incident occurred. His goal was to gather signatures for a proposed state ballot initiative aimed at capping attorney fees in personal injury cases. The organizers of the Hot August Nights event released a statement condemning the incident, clarifying that it does not reflect the values of their organization or the classic car culture.
