Nevada Authorities Probe Racist Hanging Tree Rant from Viral TikTok Video

RENO, Nev. — Authorities in Nevada are currently investigating a disturbing incident that has drawn significant attention following a viral TikTok video. The video features a confrontation between a Black man, Ricky Johnson, and a white man in Virginia City, where the latter allegedly directed a racial slur at Johnson and made a chilling reference to a “hanging tree” for people like him.

The incident occurred on August 2, during the Hot August Nights classic car event, which attracts thousands of visitors to the historic town. Johnson, who was in Virginia City to collect signatures for a ballot measure, recorded part of the confrontation and later shared it on social media. The video quickly garnered widespread condemnation from local and state officials.

“I’m still shaking every time I think about it,” Johnson expressed in a phone interview as he prepared to return to his home in Houston, Texas. He described the encounter as particularly unsettling, noting that he has faced racial slurs before, but this incident felt different. “To be actually in the middle of that and you have no way out… I felt closed in,” he said.

Storey County Undersheriff Eric Kern confirmed that the sheriff’s office has completed interviews with Johnson and potential suspects. The case has now been forwarded to the district attorney for consideration of any charges. Kern indicated that the investigation is taking the possibility of a hate crime into account, stating, “As far as a hate crime, it could be an element. There is an enhancement we are looking at.”

In the video, Johnson can be heard asking the man to repeat his comments, which escalated into a loud argument filled with profanity. A woman intervened, claiming Johnson was on her property, and the situation continued to unfold in the street. Kern noted that all parties involved have been cooperative with the investigation.

The Storey County Sheriff’s Office released a statement emphasizing its commitment to a thorough investigation and condemning racism, inequality, and hate speech. “But I want to say that in general, in Virginia City, this is not something that happens here,” Kern added, describing the incident as an isolated occurrence that has negatively impacted the community’s reputation.

Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, who is Black, expressed his support for the investigation, labeling the incident as a “hateful, racist act.” Virginia City, known for its rich history and tourism, has been a place where many come to experience its old saloons and historic sites. The town was once Nevada’s largest city during the silver mining boom of the mid-1800s.

Governor Joe Lombardo also weighed in on the incident, expressing his concern and disappointment. He stated, “Racism and hate have no place in Nevada — this behavior must be condemned in the strongest terms possible.” The Virginia City Tourism Commission echoed these sentiments, denouncing the behavior as “abhorrent and inexcusable.”

Johnson was working for Advanced Micro Targeting Inc., a Texas-based company focused on voter outreach, when the incident occurred. His goal was to gather signatures for a proposed state ballot initiative aimed at capping attorney fees in personal injury cases. The confrontation has sparked discussions about the ongoing issues of racism and hate in various communities.

The organizers of the Hot August Nights event released a statement condemning the incident, clarifying that it does not reflect the values of their organization or the classic car culture. They emphasized their commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all participants and attendees.

In a follow-up statement, the event organizers announced that they had revoked the registrations of those identified in the video. They reiterated that no representatives or staff from Hot August Nights were involved in the incident, and the individuals seen in the video were merely participants.

As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, grappling with the implications of the incident. The sheriff’s office has assured the public that it is taking the matter seriously and will provide updates as the case progresses.

The incident has sparked conversations about the need for greater awareness and action against racism and hate speech in all forms. Many community members are calling for a united front to ensure that such behavior is not tolerated and that Virginia City remains a welcoming place for everyone.

As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on accountability and the importance of fostering a community that stands against hate and discrimination. The actions taken by local authorities and community leaders will be crucial in addressing the concerns raised by this incident and in promoting a culture of respect and inclusivity.
