Amanda Kloots recently opened up about the overwhelming financial burden she faced following her late husband Nick Cordero’s prolonged hospitalization due to COVID-19. During a candid conversation on SoFi’s “Richer Lives” podcast, Kloots detailed the staggering costs associated with Cordero’s medical care, which spanned 95 days.
“Nick was in the hospital for 95 days, his whole body was being run by machines,” Kloots recalled. “The ventilator alone was $3,000 a day, and that was just one of the 20 machines keeping him alive.”
The financial implications of Cordero’s treatment were immense. Kloots admitted that she was initially in shock upon learning about the costs. “When I heard that, I immediately thought, ‘What am I going to do?’ The total bill was unimaginable,” she shared.
Nick Cordero, a Broadway star, succumbed to complications from the coronavirus in July 2020. He was 41 years old. Kloots and Cordero had married in 2017 and welcomed their son, Elvis, in 2019. Despite the severity of his condition, Kloots never anticipated losing her husband. “I never thought I was going to lose my husband. Until the day he passed away, I really thought he was going to make it,” she said.
It wasn’t until after Cordero’s death that the full financial impact hit Kloots. “The financial magnitude really, really hit me when he passed away, and calls started coming in. Unfortunately, death is a business,” she explained. The medical bill for Cordero’s treatment arrived almost a year and a half later, leaving Kloots reeling.
Kloots revealed that she and Cordero had never discussed what they would do in the event of a tragedy. “You think you’re invincible. You’re in your 40s. You think, ‘Nothing’s gonna happen to us. We’re fine. We’ve got time,'” she said. The couple had just bought their first home and were starting their lives together.
In April 2023, Kloots spoke about her connection to her late husband and how she feels she receives messages from him in her dreams. “I’ve only had three dreams of Nick since he passed, but they’ve been the most beautiful, wonderful, heartwarming dreams that, when I wake up, I feel like they really happened,” she said. In these dreams, Cordero always reassures her that he’s right beside her.
Throughout Cordero’s hospitalization, Kloots kept his fans updated on his condition. Despite the numerous medical setbacks, including mini-strokes, blood clots, septic infections, a tracheostomy, and the amputation of his right leg, Kloots remained hopeful. However, the financial burden of his care was a harsh reality she had to face alone after his passing.
Following Cordero’s death, Kloots hired a financial adviser to help her navigate the overwhelming medical bills. “I got a huge medical bill almost a year and a half later. Surprise!” she said, reflecting on the unexpected financial strain.
Despite the challenges, Kloots has continued to honor her late husband’s memory. In September, she commemorated his birthday by sharing some of the most important lessons he taught her. “Happy Birthday Nick. You would have been 45 years old today! Sharing a few of my all-time favorite pics,” she wrote in a heartfelt message on social media.
Kloots encouraged her followers to embrace aging and cherish each year as a gift. “I think we worry about getting older, worry about what age we are turning this year. I encourage you to celebrate it. Celebrate life. That you have more time on this Earth. More time with the people you love. Each year is a blessing, an absolute miracle really,” she wrote.
In a tribute video, Kloots shared cherished moments with Cordero, including his thoughts on living life to the fullest. “Go off and live your life. You live and you learn and come up on the other side a bit more wise. ‘Live your life,’ that’s what you have to do. Live your life to the fullest,” Cordero stated in the video.
As Kloots continues to navigate life without her husband, she has also embraced new beginnings. She has candidly shared her thoughts on re-entering the dating scene, drawing parallels to Taylor Swift’s highly publicized romance with Travis Kelce. “Oh, this is like my Taylor Swift Era? I don’t know, is it… I don’t know — tall dark and handsome era?” she joked.
Kloots has also addressed criticism regarding her decision to date again. “You know the criticism that came from ‘Amanda Kloots is dating not even a year after Nick has died’? Well, I nipped it in the bud, and I was like, ‘absolutely not,'” she asserted during a conversation with Cheryl Burke on “Diving Deep.”
Through it all, Kloots remains dedicated to preserving Cordero’s memory while also finding happiness and balance in her own life.
