In the early hours of Tuesday, a police officer shot a suspected robber during an incident in the Cooperativa El Progreso neighborhood of Córdoba. According to the officer’s account, he was involved in an operation alongside another officer when they were ambushed by two armed assailants.
The Córdoba Police reported that both officers were working undercover in a non-descript Ford Ka vehicle and were dressed in civilian clothing when they were attacked by the two criminals attempting to rob them.
Following the exchange of gunfire, a wounded suspected robber managed to reach the Florencio Díaz Hospital on his own, arriving around 7 AM with a gunshot wound to the chest. The case has been assigned to the District Attorney’s Office, specifically to Dr. Lourdes Quagliatti.
In a similar incident from late June, a police officer shot a criminal in the Balvanera neighborhood of Buenos Aires. In that case, an officer was forced to defend himself when a man tried to stab him in the neck. The situation escalated from a street fight between two men and resulted in criminal charges against a 22-year-old for attempted homicide.
The violent confrontation was captured on security cameras, and several witnesses confirmed that the officer acted in self-defense. Investigators later reconstructed the events, noting that the altercation occurred around 2:30 AM on Avenida Rivadavia. Two men armed with knives were arguing in public when the officer noticed the escalating violence.
As the officer intervened, one of the men lowered his weapon, while the other resisted arrest and struggled with the officer. At that critical moment, the attacker lunged at the officer’s neck with a knife, resulting in a cut to the officer’s ear. The officer then shot the assailant in the groin. Responding backup units arrived shortly after to assist both parties and transported them to Hospital Ramos Mejía.
The case has been handed over to the National Criminal Court No. 43, where the attacker faces attempted homicide charges. The authorities did not take any immediate action against the officer, focusing instead on determining the responsibilities of everyone involved.
Forensic experts at the scene seized a 25-centimeter knife, a 9mm pistol, a magazine with 16 rounds, and a spent casing from the officer’s weapons. In light of the incident, Diego Kravetz, the Secretary of Security for Buenos Aires, commended the officer for risking his life to protect others and expressed relief that both the officer and the suspect were no longer in danger.
