Former Transport Minister and current mixed group deputy José Luis Ábalos announced on Tuesday that he has filed a complaint with the Public Prosecutor’s Office regarding an alleged breach of confidentiality. He is requesting an investigation into those responsible for the leaks. During a press conference at the Congress, Ábalos, who was the third in command of the PSOE party, denied that these “repeated leaks” originated from Pedro Sánchez’s party.
Ábalos’s complaint comes after his party suspended his membership due to his political involvement in the “Koldo case.” This case centers around his former advisor, Koldo García, who is under investigation for allegedly receiving illegal commissions related to major contracts for purchasing face masks during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ábalos expressed his belief that his former party is not trying to “finish him off politically.” When asked by journalists, he firmly stated, “I don’t believe it. I don’t see any sense in that, and I don’t think it would be wise.”
As the former PSOE Secretary of Organization, Ábalos stated that he knows “who holds that information,” referring to the Central Operational Unit of the Civil Guard and the corresponding court. However, he emphasized that his main concern is to find out who is leaking the details. Although he remains “uninvestigated” in matters related to the “Delorme case,” he noted that persistent leaks are detrimental not only to him but also to “other individuals who are not public figures and are left in the dark.” In response to what he considers a campaign of harassment over the past five months, Ábalos is taking this initiative partly to defend those affected and to call attention to the lack of action against these crimes.
The former socialist leader criticized the judicial process, asserting that it has led to an “investigation for a political narrative rather than to determine accountability following the PP’s complaint.” He insisted that this complaint is unrelated to the disclosure of personal data by the PSOE—a mistake for which the party later offered an apology. He advised his former colleagues to “take note” because “this is a political war, and one cannot simply give up.”
Ábalos made his move to file a complaint just a day after the Congress management asked him to revise the questions he directed at the government, which were intended to determine whether he and those close to him were targets of irregular surveillance by state security forces. According to EFE, Ábalos pointed out in his documentation that Podemos members had allegedly been spied on by a “secret unit” of the police during Mariano Rajoy’s administration. He explained that since 2020, during his tenures as Transport Minister, Secretary of Organization of the PSOE, and now as a deputy, he has been “suffering” from media outlets publishing “data and details” about his personal life, including addresses, movements, accommodations, and family events.
