George Clooney, a prominent Democratic fundraiser, recently expressed his support for Vice President Kamala Harris as the party’s candidate in the upcoming elections. This endorsement comes after he publicly urged President Joe Biden to step down from his re-election campaign.
On Sunday, Biden suspended his campaign amid mounting pressure from Congressional Democrats and key donors, including Clooney. Many were concerned about the president’s poor performance in a debate held in June.
With this shift, Harris officially became the leading Democratic candidate on Monday after securing a majority of delegates for the party’s convention scheduled for August. She will be vying against Republican Donald Trump in the November elections.
In his statement, Clooney praised Biden’s leadership, saying, "He has demonstrated what true leadership looks like. He is once again saving democracy." He emphasized the enthusiasm surrounding Harris’s campaign, stating, "We are all very excited to do everything we can to support Vice President Harris in her historic run."
Clooney’s support adds to the widespread backing Harris has received from Hollywood, traditionally known for its financial contributions to Democratic causes. A fundraising event organized by Clooney and Julia Roberts in June raised over $30 million, marking it as the largest fundraising effort for the Democrats in history, according to Biden’s campaign.
Other Hollywood stars, including Barbra Streisand, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Viola Davis, have also publicly backed Harris.
