Days before the upcoming elections in Venezuela, the regime of Nicolás Maduro has requested that Alberto Fernández refrain from traveling to the country. Fernández had been invited to serve as an electoral observer during the elections scheduled for this Sunday.
The decision was communicated by the former president via social media, outlining the reasons for which the Venezuelan government urged him to cancel his trip, initially planned for July 28, coinciding with the public’s vote for a new administration.
In his post, Fernández stated, “Yesterday, the Venezuelan national government conveyed to me their desire for me not to travel and to forgo the duty assigned to me by the National Electoral Council.” He elaborated on the reasons behind this request, revealing that the Venezuelan government expressed concerns about public statements he had made to a national media outlet. They believed these remarks could lead to doubts about his impartiality. According to Fernández, the government was concerned that his alignment with comments made by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva a day earlier could undermine the electoral process’s stability.
As the news unfolds, many are watching how these developments will impact the elections and the overall political climate in Venezuela.
