Around noon, Alejandro Moreno Cárdenas, the national leader of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), arrived at the party’s executive committee to submit the necessary documents for his re-election campaign. He is seeking to continue leading the party that has faced significant challenges in recent years.
Moreno registered as a candidate alongside Alma Carolina Viggiano Austria, who had to step down from her role as the PRI’s secretary-general to participate in the internal election process. Upon his arrival, he was met with applause from party members present in the hall, indicating strong support from some sectors of the party.
On the same day, the PRI also commenced the registration process for candidates aspiring to lead the party from 2024 to 2028, in line with its official guidelines. Among the first to register was federal deputy Lorena Piñón, who came to register with her running mate, Cuauhtémoc Betanzos, a city councilor focused on urban development, ecology, and public works in San Pedro Cholula.
As Lorena Piñón stepped forward to participate, she signaled a competitive spirit within the PRI, which has seen a decline in its political standing over the past few years. The party has faced increasing criticism and opposition from former leaders who are unhappy with recent changes that allowed Moreno to seek re-election twice after his initial term.
This internal process highlights the complexities the PRI faces in reshaping its leadership and maintaining unity, especially as it approaches a crucial electoral period. The party has gradually lost its dominance, slipping to the third political force in the country, primarily due to the loss of several governing positions over the years.
